Concert Band - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1389302 Composed by Florence Beatrice Price. Arranged by John Ivor Holland. 20th Century,Classical,Multicultural,World. 188 pages. John Ivor Holland #972867. Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1389302). Born in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1887, Florence Price received early musical training from her mother, going on to study at the prestigious New England Conservatory of Music, graduating in 1906 with a Soloist’s Diploma in Organ Performance, and a Teacher’s Diploma in Piano Performance. After completing her degree, Price returned back to the south to teach music and after about 20 years, moved her family moved to Chicago to ultimately escape the racial tension in the south. It was here that she was able to properly establish herself as a concert pianist, organist and composer. She composed over 300 works, including 20 full orchestral pieces and over 110 art songs, many performed by leading American orchestras and esteemed vocalists. Price was the first African-American woman composer to earn national recognition. Seen as a pioneer among women, she was celebrated constantly for her achievements. Composed in 1943, about 10 years before her death, 'The Oak' is an unpublished tone poem, perhaps more appropriately described as an 'orchestral essay', quite serious in tone and character. The foreboding opening slowly grows as more instruments enter the mix. The piece explores a number of different moods and atmospheres, from mysterious to more aggressive and irritated. Arranged for symphonic wind ensemble, 'The Oak' is a major contribution to the repertoire and deserves detailed attention - there are two different endings, the second, one that resolves quietly, is written in the score as 'the composer's preference'.

From Chopin to Joplin, her influences were varied and many, and she also enjoyed creating her own arrangements of popular songs. While earning a business degree at the University of Colorado Boulder, Christine was inspired by George Winston's new age genre of solo piano, yet the piano remained only a hobby for many years. In 1990, my mother requested a cassette tape of my piano music for her birthday, so I went to a local recording studio. It was then that I rediscovered my passion for playing the piano, and I realized my gift to her was really her gift to me. Sadly, her mother passed away just months later. Christine immersed herself into the piano to comfort her grief and voice her emotions, releasing heartfelt compositions that captured listeners. Christine's fans have written, There is a richness to your sound, a refined elegance and passionate intelligence that could only come from working hard at your craft, and ...her music is vibrant, colorful and full of life. Skilled at the art of blending chords and note progressions into beautiful aural tapestries, her music is at once a welcome retreat from the mundane and ordinary. Her emotions come through her music...and through her music, she is able to reach out and touch the hearts of millions of appreciative piano music fans.COMPOSER.

Alto Saxophone,Piano - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.971651 Composed by Jeffrey Hoover. 20th Century,Contemporary,World. Score and part. 57 pages. Musicart Publications #4627679. Published by Musicart Publications (A0.971651). Winner of the 2019 SMP Press Contemporary Composition award, Wu Xing - Sonata for Five Elements (5 movements, 15 min. 30 sec) was composed by Jeffrey Hoover for Yusheng Li, who initiated the first professional university saxophone degree in China.  A work for alto saxophone and piano, Wu Xing reflects a fusion of American and Chinese musical aesthetics and compositional techniques.  Each movement represents an element in the traditional Wu Xing generative cycle.  Musical elements of one movement carry into the next, in the same way these traditional Chinese elements evolve into the next: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water.  The fourth movement, Metal, is for unaccompanied saxophone, and includes extended techniques including microtones, multiphonics, and altered tone colors.  As with other compositions by Jeffrey Hoover, Hoover has also created a series of paintings that visually interpret the music: Dancing in the Trees, The Ancient Lance, The Dragon's Creation, Temple Bells and Swords, and Life of the Earth.  In the way the music is a fusion of American and Chines techniques, the paintings incorporate the Wu Xing philosophy approach.  Images of the paintings may be projected during performance and are available directly from the composer.Jeffrey Hoover's compositions- music ranging from soloist to symphony orchestra -have received recognition through the prestigious Trieste prize, the international Luigi Russolo competition, awards from Mu Phi Epsilon, the Lancaster Fine Arts Festival, grants, publications fellowships and more than 20 commissions. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.540712). The composer writes : This work was premièred on April 27, 2003 at the Eglise Saint-Roch in Paris with the prestigious Orchestre de la Musique de L’Armée de L’Air, under the direction of my friend and colleague, Claude Picheraureau. I have always been fascinated by the beauty of the Cosmos, which has inspired many of my works. Feelings of infinite movement can be expressed musically and it seemed to me that one of the ways to do this was to end this work on a repeated phrase played in a long perdendosi, to give the impression that one is hearing the echoes of the finished phrase as the instruments stop playing. I had just started to write this work when I received a note for the Paris Observatory which gave me the news that the astronomical community had decided to name a newly discovered asteroid for Jean-Pierre Luminet. When I wrote to Jean-Pierre to congratulate him on this honour, reminding him with the Petit Prince that not everyone has their own star, I asked him if he would accept that I name this work for concert band with the full name of his asteroid: 5523 Luminet 1991 PH8. Jean-Pierre accepted my proposition by return letter : ..., not only do I not have any objection, but I would be very honoured. To be in the celestial spheres in the form of a rock and also in the form of music, what more could one ask for? The work is scored for : Piccolo 2 Flûtes/2 Flutes 2 Hautbois/2 Oboes Cor Anglais/English Horn 2 Bassons/2 Bassoons Contrebasson/Contrabassoon Petite Clarinette en Mib/Eb Clarinet 1ers Clarinettes en Sib/1st Bb Clarinets : 2mes Clarinettes en Sib/2nd Bb Clarinets Clarinette Basse/Bass Clarinet 1er Saxophone Alto en Mib/1st Eb Alto Saxophone 2me Saxophone Alto en Mib/2nd Eb Alto Saxophone Saxophone Ténor en Sib/Bb Tenor Saxophone Saxophone Baryton en Mib/Eb Baritone Saxophone 4 Cors en fa/4 F Horns 2 trompettes en Sib/2 Bb Trumpets 2 cornets en Sib/2 Bb Cornets 2 Trombones Ténors/2 Tenor Trombones Trombone Basse/Bass Trombone Euphonium Tuba en Ut/Tuba in C Contrebasse à cordes/String Bass Harpe/Harp Timbales/Tympani Percussion I : Marimba Cloches en Tube/Tubular Bells &wRt Grosse Caisse/Bass Drum = G.C Tambour/Field Drum = Tamb. Johann Schrammel, (22 May 1850 – 17 June 1893), was an Austrian composer and musician.Johann was the illegitimate son of the clarinettist Kaspar Schrammel and his late wife Aloisia Ernst; his younger brother Josef Schrammel was in a similar situation. With approximately six years, Johann Schrammel could sing in the church choir in his home town Neulerchenfeld.
