Gioachino Rossini is known for his delightful Italian operas, especially the overtures, like William Tell or The Barber of Seville. Early in his life he composed a set of 6 Sonatas for String Quartet. Later, Frederik Berr, a clarinetist known by Rossini, arranged the quartets for winds (c. 1820). This setting for clarinet duet by John Gibson uses Berr's arrangement but with a considerable amount of editing needed for the only edition currently available. The music overall is not difficult, however there are sections for each instrument that require a fair amount of technique. A score is provided, however it is better to play from the individual parts due to page turn issues.

L'Italiana in Algeri  (The Italian Girl in Algiers) is an operatic dramma giocoso in two acts by Gioachino Rossini to an Italian libretto by Angelo Anelli, based on his earlier text set by Luigi Mosca. It premiered at the Teatro San Benedetto in Venice on 22 May 1813. The music is characteristic of Rossini's style, remarkable for its fusion of sustained, manic energy with elegant, pristine melodies.
