Presented here is a wonderful Canzona published around 1615 for 10 brass with substitute parts for trumpets and trombones. The 4th Trombone part can also be played with Tuba if so desired. A great representative work of Gabrieli’s, this piece presents a 1 bar dance-like rhythm that is repeated and underscored throughout. After many variations, a chanson-like dance theme can be heard followed by a final presentation of the original melody that heads to a grand conclusion. An impressive and fun work for almost any church or concert setting.

One of the most popular of his smaller instrument works are the 4 Canzonas. Presented here is the second of them written around 1608. Quite popular among brass players, this work starts with a running theme that is almost fugue-like as it passes from one instrument to the next. A great work from Gabrieli, it is complex in structure yet never loses its pleasing sonorities that build until the final climax.

Each choir has its opportunity to sound the melody, followed by the others choirs, augmenting the previous effect even more. This 4-minute work is appropriate for advanced performers.
