Leon Jessel, or Léon Jessel (January 22, 1871 – January 4, 1942) was a German composer of operettas and light classical music pieces. Today he is best known internationally as the composer of the popular jaunty march The Parade of the Tin Soldiers, also known as The Parade of the Wooden Soldiers. Jessel was a prolific composer who wrote hundreds of light orchestral pieces, piano pieces, songs, waltzes, mazurkas, marches, choruses, and other salon music. He achieved considerable acclaim with a number of his operettas - in particular Schwarzwaldmädel(Black Forest Girl), which remains popular to this day.Because Jessel was a Jew by birth (he converted to Christianity at the age of 23), with the rise of Nazism in the late 1920s, his composing virtually came to an end, and his musical works, which had been very popular, were suppressed and nearly forgotten.In Great Britain the piece was used for many years in BBC radio's Children's Hour to introduce the series Toytown, based on stories by S. When one goes to offer one’s condolences to the family in mourning, the first thing you can sense (smell) is the incense, ‘Hyang’. Personally, this reminisces my grandfather’s death when I was young. The sunk atmosphere, gloomy faces, soft whispers, occasional agitations, sobs, angry cries, and a complete silence...: these are the images that occupied the six year-old girl’s mind who did not understand the meaning and grief of the death at that time. Focusing on the sound color, the piece expresses the images that I captured from the mourning house through the various timbre create by different gestures with different instruments. Consequently, three senses are conceptually represented in this music: aural(sound), visual(color), and olfactory(incense).

It was recorded on July 25, 1930 by Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians (on the Victor label) with vocal by Clare Hanlon and The Waring Girls. Several other artists also recorded the song in 1930 including bandleaders Ted Wallace (Columbia) and Earl Burtnett (Brunswick) as well as vocalists Johnny Marvin (Victor), Marion Harris (Brunswick) and Lee Morse (Columbia). This version was developed from the original 1930 sheet music and features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements - we hope you like what we've done with this grand old tune!
