I would like to present my first string orchestra, Walk Among The Gods. It includes a director's score, as well as individual parts for Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Violoncello, and Contrabass. This composition is centered around Greek Mythology by highlighting a different character in each movement; Aphrodite, Hades, Kronos and Zeus.

Aphrodite: Dance With The Goddess of Love is written as a Polonaise (Polish dance) in a Rondo format. This movement is taken at an Andante.

Hades: March to the Underworld is a haunting march written in G minor. I composed this in cut time at an Allegro Moderato. This is definitely my favorite of all four movements.
 
Kronos: The God of Time is comprised of many different time signatures to go along with its meaning; 5/4, 6/8, 12/8, 4/4, 6/4, 3/8 and 3/4. 
 
 Zeus: King of the Gods is meant to create a regal, but triumphant feel as the finale. I also had fun writing a good portion of this movement pizzicato.

Benjamin Godard (1849-1895) was a French  violinist and composer of Jewish heritage. He wrote hundreds of works, including  symphonies, operas, concertos, chamber and solo pieces, and songs. Today he is  most remembered for his five symphonies and the Berceuse from his opera,  Jocelyn. In style, Godard's music is reminiscent of the early Romantic  period rather than the more grandiose style of Wagner. Godard wrote two sonatas for solo violin. The first dates from the 1870s. The  second was composed in the 1890s and published after his death. Both sonatas contain four movements and employ baroque dance forms. The Deuxiéme (second) Sonata,  arranged here for guitar solo, opens with a Sarabande in A minor, marked molto  moderato e pompasamente (very moderately and pompously). The following Rigodon in C major is quick and convivial, although a contrasting section in C  minor tempers the mood. The third movement, Adagio non ma troppo, begins in a  tranquil F major. The texture soon thickens and makes striking use of the  instrument’s lower register. A sudden modulation to F minor provides the  sonata's most introspective moment. The piece returns to A minor and ends in a dramatic  cliffhanger on the dominant. The rhythmic Bourrée serves as a true  finale and includes a frenetic contrapuntal section recalling the violin  sonatas of J. S. Bach.

Being of Italian heritage I especially thought it would be fun to compose The Godmother  which contains very small hints of the theme from The Godfather throughout.  See if you can pick them out. Thinking back into my past I visualized all my Italian relatives in the family and the life style we led which helped give the composition that Italian flair. I truly believe you, your students and your audience will enjoy this piece. Written for the Intermediate level the composition includes full score and parts for Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola, Cello and St. Bass. The lyrical nature of the tune combined with the powerful poem about God's love make this one of the greatest hymns ever. This arrangement maintains the power of the tune and represents the beauty of the poetry musically. Each verse has its own special setting corresponding to the words of the hymn. Starting in a mysterious, martial and subdued style, The Love of God develops into a strong but respectful to the hymn type of finale, complete with musical representations of the waves of the sea. It is accessible to High School groups but also appropriate for Community or College ensembles. Because of its history (see below) it can appeal to a wide range of faiths and inspire unity and peace. Audiences and performers alike are sure to find it inspiring and uplifting.

A little about the history of the hymn:
Could we with ink the ocean fill, and were the skies of parchment made;
Were every stalk on earth a quill, and every man a scribe by trade;
To write the love of God above would drain the ocean dry;
Nor could the scroll contain the whole, though stretched from sky to sky.
These timeless words inspired Lehman to write The Love of God after they were found edged on the wall of an asylum patient's room. They are an adaptation and translation of a poem originally written in Aramaic by the Jewish Rabbi of Worms, Germany around the year 1050. This poem in turn is similar to a passage in the Qur'an. What an incredible journey for these great words: an ancient poem that has its roots in the Qur'an, later adapted by a Rabbi, written on the wall of an insane asylum by a patient, and finally taken up by a Christian to be the basis of a beautiful song. Surely God's love and music are the only two things powerful enough in our World to bring unity and respect in the face of pride and violence.
