Haitian voodoo rhythms, and gods Damballa Wedo, Papa Legba, Ezulie, Baron Zamdi the Gede are brought to the orchestral concert stage in this second symphony of American composer James Nathaniel Holland, who served for a while in Haiti in the US Peace Corps in the 1990s. The symphony for large orchestra is divided into three movements. It begins with a rousing invocation which melts into a sensitive section, sympathetic of the human condition and of the Republic of the Caribbean island of Haiti. The second movement, actually three sections, is very a very African sounding fugue that changes into a contraposition of the quiet, mysterious Minwet and the European French Minuet, and ends with an almost church joyous, dance of complex percussion, call and response. The last movement incorporates multimedia of the beauty of spoken Kreyol language: stating that we, ourselves, are the gods expressed in the Haitian folk dances. And ends with an energetic Haitian carnival section.   Great, varied and different, showpiece for any symphony orchestral concert with overtones of jazz and Afro Carib music. It includes a director's score, as well as individual parts for Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Violoncello, and Contrabass. This composition is centered around Greek Mythology by highlighting a different character in each movement; Aphrodite, Hades, Kronos and Zeus.Aphrodite: Dance With The Goddess of Love is written as a Polonaise (Polish dance) in a Rondo format. This movement is taken at an Andante.Hades: March to the Underworld is a haunting march written in G minor. I composed this in cut time at an Allegro Moderato. This is definitely my favorite of all four movements. Kronos: The God of Time is comprised of many different time signatures to go along with its meaning; 5/4, 6/8, 12/8, 4/4, 6/4, 3/8 and 3/4.   Zeus: King of the Gods is meant to create a regal, but triumphant feel as the finale. I also had fun writing a good portion of this movement pizzicato. Enjoy!

The school was doing a curriculum-wide reading project on Greek mythology. It seemed natural to create a wind ensemble suite based on three stories from Greek mythology. Each movement creates a miniature tone poem with clear motifs for each character in the myths. The characters include Athena (who makes a return in the final movement), Arachne, Orpheus, Charon the ferryman, Cerberus the three-headed dog, Sisyphus, Persephone, Eurydice, Perseus, and Medusa. The eleven-minute piece is colorful and inventive with plenty of special techniques in the percussion especially designed for middle school students. Mortals, Gods, and Heroes is in three movements: I. Arachne’s Web II. The Passage of OrpheusIII. Perseus and the Gorgon The score is formatted for 8.5 X 14 (legal) size paper and is 57 pages.
