Stephen Chatman’s Eight Love Songs for High Baritone Voice, Violin, Violoncello and Piano (formerly known as Love Songs) was commissioned in 2010 by MusicFestVancouver for renowned Canadian baritone, Tyler Duncan, and Australia's pre-eminent chamber music ensemble Freshwater Trio. The set of eight songs is the result of ongoing collaborations between lyricist, Tara Wohlberg, and composer, Stephen Chatman. The lyrics, full of inner rhymes and wit, explore far ranging aspects of love, such as unexpected encounters, tenderness, Schubert and his song Gretchen am Spinnrade, dreams, dating, some Hanky-panky, and the wrong and right moves of Mr. Smooth. The contrasting musical settings typify Chatman's eclectic panoply of classical and popular musical styles, from Ragtime and Tango to Neo-Romanticism.

As with Ariana's Nocturne, Adventure, Imagination and Ballet: Parts 1and 2 the music is based on a motif that 'exclaims' Ariana's name. Unlike some of the other pieces in this ongoing suite there is no specific story – the music just looks forward to a restful summer day in our brave new world.

I know that the music of Sigfrid Karg-Elert is probably not well known amongst the Woodwind fraternity, however when the notes are extracted from the Organ scores, a completely new light is shed upon the music that he wrote. As with the other pieces by Karg-Elert on this site that I have arranged for Clarinet groups in particular, there seems to be no chord extension barred from the ongoing harmonies, elaborate rhythms on the inner parts and such invention! Maybe with a couple of hearings you will get what I mean! I'm sure that in a generous acoustic, this music would sound glorious.... just like the Organ...only different!!

As the title would suggest, it has a rather sad and melancholic feel. Several events in my personal life of a tragic nature which occurred during the year it was written (2014) have subconsciously contributed to this feeling, including in May 2014 the loss of a friend and colleague, followed in September by the loss of my father-in-law. An ongoing health issue which began in April prevented me from playing and performing to the best of my ability. Thankfully this issue has resolved itself; there is a ray of hope for the future. Intervallic Structure (Andante con moto) II. Tone and Color (Meno mosso) III. Urban Rhythm (Allegro ma non troppo) Based upon a strict and unvarying formula of patterns that are passed equally between the three violin parts, all three movements utilize this same precise structure of A, B, C, and Ostinato phrases. Each movement, however, while based upon the same formulaic set of patterns, vary by the material of the four phrases themselves; the phrases’ material is each based upon very different scales, depending on the particular movement’s character. Counterpoint Invariable is a successful thought-experiment, turned to driving and evocative emotional artwork, highlighting Wallin Huff's ongoing fascination with the logic of mechanical structure giving way to outward beauty. It is a true, fulfilling reward to perform and explore this work in its entirety.

Hedwige Chrétien (15 July 1859 – 1944) was a French composer, appointed professor at the Paris Conservatoire in 1889 where she had previously been a student from 1874. She was a prolific composer, yet not much else is known about her life. Her compositions, about 150 in all, consist of pieces for piano, orchestral and chamber works, songs, two ballets and two one-act operas. One of the most extensive collections of her work in the United States is held in the University of Michigan's Women Composers Collection, which is available on microfilm from there and other libraries. 'Offertoire' dates from 1926 and is taken from a collection of works for organ or harmonium called 'In Memoriam' for use in funeral services but works well as a standalone piece, particularly suitable for memorial events or moments of calm in a programme. Arranged as part of an ongoing project to bring more music by women into the worldwide concert band repertoire.
