And while watching our society fall apart, I was struck by the reality of how insignificant we are as a species. The passage from Psalm 103 comparing mortals to grass has been on my mind for quite some time, and I have been looking for an opportunity to set it to music. I choose to focus on the first line “Homo, sicut fenum dies ejus, in English, “The life of mortals is like grass, so fitting for the ongoing pandemic.The piece is structured around the idea of canon and repetition, and the motifs are sung throughout different parts as a soft wind sweeping through the choir … A sparse compositional texture evolves, depicting the fragility of the human race. Preferably this piece should be sung in a venue with a great deal of reverb, making the single voices blend into a homogenous whole. I could easily see how the choir could be placed around the audience or spread out in a way that would make the different motifs come from different directions. – Henrik Dahlgren.

Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1444294). Augusta Mary Anne Holmès (16 December 1847 – 28 January 1903) was a French composer of Irish descent. In 1871, Holmès became a French national and added the accent to her last name. She wrote the texts to almost all of her vocal music herself, including songs, oratorios, the libretto of her opera ('La Montagne noire') and the programmatic poems for her symphonic poems including 'Irlande' and 'Andromède'. Despite showing talent at the piano, she was not allowed to study at the Paris Conservatoire, but took lessons privately. Like other female composers from the nineteenth century including Fanny Mendelssohn and Clara Schumann, Holmès published some of her earlier works under a male pseudonym (Hermann Zenta) because women in European society at that time were not taken seriously as artists and were discouraged from publishing. 'Clair de Lune' is the second of the 'Trois Petites Pièces' for flute and piano, composed in 1896, bring together the homelands dear to Holmès’ heart: Ireland, her country of origin, and France, her country of adoption. I find it unfathomable that after millenia of evolution, and the development of better methods of cooperation between nations, there are still throwbacks like Putin who are quite willing to resort to the use of force to get their way. Politics aside, I felt compelled to write something that expresses the sadness I feel for the Ukrainian people - for their losses, and the random destruction taking place in their Country.

The family moved around somewhat, but her compositions soon became noticed whilst living in Nashville, where she was a sought-after organist for multiple churches alongside her husband, John Ashford, as choirmaster. Mostly, we tend to think of a barcarolle as a gentle compound time boat ride. This work by Mendelssohn, however, is more like a competition between gondoliers to see who can get through the Gran Canale the fastest!A difficult and challenging piece for brass because of the flow needed to keep the music light and delicate.
