„Epitaphium wurde ursprünglich für die Trauerfeier des 2007 verstorbenen britischen Fagottisten und Musikwissenschaflters William Waterhouse geschrieben. Der Komponist Graham Waterhouse wollte seinem Vater eine Art „musikalisches Denkmal im Kleinen setzen, etwas Persönliches, Rituelles, „zeitlos wie ein Grabstein. Das kurze eindrucksvolle Stück ist von hoher Klangintensität und Dichte. Reine Intervalle (Quarte, Quinte, Oktave) prägen die harmonische Sprache. Als verstecktes Zitat taucht das Motiv „Requiescant in pace aus Brittens „War Requiem auf.

The composition was composed in response to a poem written in 1992 by Karl Dietrich Hepp (Kaspar Damian Hosp under his pen name). The first letters of the individual movements of the string trio are H E P P: Halcyon, Ethereal, Pointillist and Perpetuum. The poem by K.D.H. was inspired by a photo of his father taken on a ski tour in 1931. Both, the poem and the photo are printed in the edition and everything adds up to a fascinating, artistic chain reaction. The diatonic material of the first movement in the composition by Waterhouse expresses optimism, energy and liberation. The 2nd movement is a study in pianissimo harmonics. The following 3rd movement is a pizzicato study in a bright and vivid harmonic tableau. In the last movement, a kind of Moto Perpetuo, the musical material continually transforms. Graham Waterhouse (*1962) was born into a musical family and has lived in Munich since 1992 where he is active as a freelance composer and cellist. He received his musical education at Cambridge University and at music colleges in Essen and Cologne. His works to date comprise mainly chamber music and instrumental concerts. Waterhouse performs as a solo cellist and in various chamber music formations. He has performed his own Cello Concerto in Toluca, Mexico City, Gorkij, Weimar and Baden-Baden.

Jacobean Salute could be interpreted as a miniature symphony. Originally, a considerable part of the thematic material was intended for Scottish bagpipes which is why the B flat major bass pipes are still audible in certain parts. The glissandi of the strings, for instance, are meant to convey how the pipes are being blown through. The introductory motif is based on a lament from the 17th century. Lady Doyle’s Salute“ whose melancholic mood penetrates the complete piece dates from the reign of James VI, King of Scotland (who would later become James I of England). The Scottish aspect of the composition is further emphasized and intensified by passages which resemble a Jig and a Reel (old Scottish dances).

Les premières esquisses du nonet op. 30 furent faites durant l'été 1991 dans le golfe de Lerici (Italie du Nord) qui empreigne l'atmosphère de l'œuvre de son calme idyllique et des souvenirs de Percy Bysshe Shelley et Lord Byron qui vécurent tous deux là pendant un certain temps. L'œuvre comprend un mouvement dont les différentes subdivisions sont annoncées par un motif d'introduction au cor. Le nonet fut achevé en octobre 1991 et créé le même mois à Zug en Suisse.
