Concert Band - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1518069 Composed by Edward Elgar. Arranged by James Symington. 20th Century,Classical,Film/TV,Historic,Patriotic. 29 pages. James Edward Ernest Symington #1092231. Published by James Edward Ernest Symington (A0.1518069). The name of the variation refers to Augustus J. Jaeger, who was employed as music editor by the London publisher Novello & Co. He was a close friend of Elgar's, giving him useful advice but also severe criticism, something Elgar greatly appreciated. Elgar later related how Jaeger had encouraged him as an artist and had stimulated him to continue composing despite setbacks. Nimrod is described in the Old Testament as a mighty hunter before the Lord, Jäger being German for hunter. In 1904 Elgar told Dora Penny (Dorabella) that this variation is not really a portrait, but the story of something that happened. Once, when Elgar had been very depressed and was about to give it all up and write no more music, Jaeger had visited him and encouraged him to continue composing. He referred to Ludwig van Beethoven, who had a lot of worries, but wrote more and more beautiful music. And that is what you must do, Jaeger said, and he sang the theme of the second movement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8 Pathétique. Elgar disclosed to Dora that the opening bars of Nimrod were made to suggest that theme. Can't you hear it at the beginning? Only a hint, not a quotation. This variation has become popular in its own right and is sometimes used at British funerals, memorial services, and other solemn occasions. It is always played at the Cenotaph, Whitehall in London at the National Service of Remembrance. A version was also played during the Hong Kong handover ceremony in 1997 and at the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games. The “Nimrod” variation was the final orchestral composition (before the national anthem) played by the Greek National Orchestra in a televised June 2013 concert, before the 75-year-old Athenian ensemble was dissolved in the wake of severe government cutbacks. An adaptation of the piece appears at the ending of the 2017 film Dunkirk in the score by Hans Zimmer. This arrangement for Flex-Band has been adapted to suit the instrumentalists. The key has changed and this makes it much more playable and more secure.

Jazz Combo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.781983 By Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney. By Irving Berlin. Arranged by Aaron Hettinga. Christmas,Contemporary,Holiday,Jazz,Standards. Score and parts. 10 pages. Aaron Hettinga #6027125. Published by Aaron Hettinga (A0.781983). This lesser known holiday-season standard by the great Irving Berlin is available here for 4 Trombones and Rhythm section. This ballad had its debut in the classic film White Christmas with Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney. This arrangement was written as a Head chart where, after the initial rundown of the melody, the form is repeated for as many soloists as are desired before a final repeat playing the tune and proceeding to the second ending. Chord changes are provided in all parts for flexibility in soloist selection. For the most part, the ensemble parts are accessible to a broad range of playing abilities, but the top part is the greater challenge for range and melodic lyricism.Performance options: This ballad runs the risk of dragging along so slowly that it feels interminable. Even at a moderately slow tempo, it’s important to keep things moving. If it feels that the solo section takes too long, it also works well to bring the ensemble back at the B section of the melody (meas. 21) for a briefer wrap up.

Small Ensemble Bass Guitar,Drums,Piano,Voice - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.969094 Composed by Dick Coburn, John Schonberger, and Vincent Rose. Arranged by Dan Gabel. Contemporary. Score and parts. 2 pages. Daniel Clayton Gabel #6256055. Published by Daniel Clayton Gabel (A0.969094). A favorite of bands, jazz musicians, and dancers for one hundred years, Whispering has stood the test of time. It is a great tune, and one of great historic importance that deserves a place in your band's library! This is more than a lead sheet: it is an arrangement in Ab, including the lyrics, and the rarely-heard verse (with a second set of lyrics). This is ready to pass out to your combo: bass, guitar, drums, piano, voice, and some horns, too. The chart is professionally engraved and formatted for ease of reading. Optional Tag ending provides a nice arranged ending for your group as well. This arrangement is based on the stellar recording by Bing Crosby with Bob Scoby's Frisco Jazz Band on:Bing with a Beat (RCA Victor, 1957) - see history below.Whispering - a brief history:One of the first recordings made by a Big Band, it was a huge hit for Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra, selling over one-million copies in 1920. Benny Goodman's Trio recorded a famous version for Victor in 1936 featuring Teddy Willson on piano and Gene Krupa on drums. The pleasing chord changes are the basis for the famous contrafact by Dizzy Gillespie: Groovin' High. Revived once again with the original verse, Bing Crosby recorded it on one of the best jazz vocal albums of the 1950s: Bing with a Beat, with Bob Scoby's Frisco Jazz Band. Because of the historic importance and the great melody, Whispering was chosen by Dan Gabel (the arranger of this lead sheet) as his personal theme tune in 2010. Gabel opens every show with different arrangements of the song, featured by Dan Gabel's High Society Orchestra (Hot Jazz of the Roaring 20s), and recorded and featured with great success by Dan Gabel and The Abletones (Big Band).
