Guitar Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1463459

Composed by John Dowland (1563-1626). Arranged by Clive Lane. Classical,Renaissance. Score and Parts. 34 pages. Clive Lane #1042157. Published by Clive Lane (A0.1463459).

Lachrimæ or Seven Tears figured in Seven passionate pavans, with divers other pavans, galliards and allemands, set forth for the lute, viols, or violons, in five parts’
is a collection of instrumental music composed by John Dowland and published in 1604. Apart from the sheer quality of the music, it is notable as the first publication of English music scored specifically for strings and for lute, and the first to have used the table layout for consort music.

There are seven Lachrimae pavans, which are variations on the theme that Dowland had already made famous as a lute solo and a song (“Flow my tears”).

The “divers other” compositions are: two almans (“almands”), nine lively galliards (“galiards”), two sombre pavans, and a “funerall.”
There are 21 pieces in all and I have divided them into three books, retaining the original ordering of the pieces.
This Book Two (8-14) - three pavans and four galliards:

8.     Pavan: “Semper Dowland, semper Dolens”
9.      Sir Henry Umpton’s Funeral
10.  Mr John Langton’s Pavan
11.  The King of Denmark’s Galliard
12.  The Earl of Essex Galliard

13.  Sir John Souch, his Galliard
14.  Mr Henry Noell, his Galliard

(See Book One and Book Three for the others)

For this arrangement for guitar quartet*, I have combined two of the parts (part three and part five) to make guitar 4 (with some minor adjustments).

Time values have been halved, and in several cases (Nos. 9,12,15,16,17,20,21), I have transposed the key to a more guitar-friendly key.

Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Klas Krantz. Baroque,Classical. Score and parts. 7 pages. Amadeus Music #6065477. Published by Amadeus Music (A0.532398).

The Inventions and Sinfonias BWV 772-801, also known as the Two- and Three-Part Inventions, are a collection of thirty short keyboard compositions by J. S. Bach (1685-1750): 15 inventions, which are 2-part contrapuntal pieces, and 15 sinfonias, which are 3-part contrapuntal pieces. They were originally written as musical exercises for his students. The two groups of pieces are both arranged in order of ascending key, each group covering eight major and seven minor keys. The inventions were composed in Köthen (1717-23); the sinfonias, on the other hand, were probably not finished until the beginning of the Leipzig (1723-50) period.

By Ernesto Nazareth. By Ernesto Nazareth. Arranged by Bisdre Santos. 20th Century,Chamber,Multicultural,Standards,World. 13 pages. Soul - Musical Creations #6509757. Published by Soul - Musical Creations (A0.949010).

One of Nazareth's most elaborate pieces, the modern brigh waltz Fantástica (Phantastica, in the original spelling) is part of Nazareth's group of concert pieces. These are songs with the greatest pianistic pretensions, which, in general, were not published during his lifetime and are rarely played. It was first published in 2008 by the portal Musica Brasilis and does not have a dedication. In his autograph manuscript there is no date; it is only known that in 1922 it already existed, as his name appears in one of the listings that Nazareth made at that time. Its subtitle may have been inspired by Chopin's first four bright waltzes. This influence is also felt in the elaborate piano technique used in several passages that demand great virtuosity. This waltz could have been part of the repertoire of pianists from the great European Romantic tradition, contemporaries of Nazareth, but who never heard of his work. Until 2012, it was recorded only twice.

Composed by Joh. Seb. Bach. Arranged by Georg Mertens. Baroque,Chamber,Classical,Traditional,Wedding. Individual part. 13 pages. Georg Mertens #909357. Published by Georg Mertens (A0.1320915).

Having grown up as a cellist, who played the Suite since I am 11 years of age, I sometimes imagined or even hummed suitable bass notes, which you can't reach on the cello. Also, I imagined certain harmonies, completed in imagination when playing the Suite for years.
- With many arrangements by guitarists, who didn't play the Suite on cello, I can hear, they are not going the right way!
- Bach himself arranged cello Suite No 5 for lute - as lute Suite No 3 - giving us an example of how he himself went about when adding accompaniment notes - and he certainly did!
Good examples are Gavotte 2 and the Gigue from Cello Suite No 5 - or lute Suite No 3.
Bach also arranged the violin Partita No 3 in E major for lute - as lute Suite No 4, another example of how he himself went about.
- In the arrangement here, I tried also to transfer the slurs on the cello sometimes to the guitar - e.g. in the Gigue - when I found it brings better the intended articulation better out.
I hope you thoroughly enjoy the arrangement!
