One For Herman is an Alfred's Guitar 101 Ensembles piece that features a classic rock oriented, straight eighth note feel. Since the song is layered, students will learn to concentrate on their own part, while other parts enter at different times. Guitar 1 plays the melody while Guitars 2 and 3 provide accompaniment and some melodic fills. Guitar 4 gives students a chance to learn to play a repeating riff in the bass, along with other variations that give this song its character.

Derek Hasted writes This well-known piece is presented here as a very accessible guitar trio for an early-intermediate group of three guitars, or a large ensemble, making it ideal for a School Concert or as a crowd-pleaser in an adult concert.

Guitar 3 has the bottom string tuned down to D, and the parts increase very slightly in complexity between the third part and the tune.

The music is free from fingerings so that a more experienced ensemble can play the melody entirely in VII position, whereas a less experienced group might want to stay in lower positions where possible.

By the same token, there are no dynamics - but please add as many as you wish, to make the performance “yoursâ€.

“The Easy Winners†might not be the first Scott Joplin Rag to reach the tip of your tongue (I’ve also arranged The Entertainer), but many feel it is one of his very finest.

Derek Hasted writes A haunting melody (pardon the pun!) is interspersed with lush & uplifting phrases and exotic chromatic passages. It’s an unusual and delightful piece that makes a refreshing and unexpected concert item.

Guitar 3 is tuned to 6=D.

I’ve fingered some of the more complex chord shapes, mainly as an aide-memoire, because the key signature and the accidentals combine to make some of the chords hard to read - for example there are F major and F# minor arpeggios looking (at first sight) identical on the page. Some of the more complex chromatic movement is actually gloriously straightforward because of the way I’ve arranged the music to use shapes that slide down the neck. Here and there I’ve chosen enharmonic equivalents to make the music easier on the eye.

Derek Hasted writes This popular Christmas piece fits a guitar trio (or large ensemble) very well.

I’ve made a key-change compared to the original, so that the music is comfortable on guitar, and it’s really rather busy so that the audience hears a really interesting sound.

There is a bell-like introduction and conclusion to the piece, and you’ll recognise the sound of Big Ben, the bell that is an iconic London sound.

There are three verses so that each line has something really interesting yet accessible to play.

Guitar 3 is presented in treble and bass clefs to suit classical guitar, a contra guitar or a bass instrument. It’s fine to have both versions of Guitar 3 together in your ensemble, and the bass clef version has a few edits to make sure that everything works at a sensible pitch (especially the sound of Big Ben!)

Manzanita is an ensemble piece to help students learn to play and read in 3/4 time. Guitar 4 challenges the student to play steady streams of eighth notes in the bass register, while the Guitar 5 part helps develop a good time feel while learning to change basic chords accurately.

Derek Hasted writes This piece is so well-known, even if the English translation to the title comes as a bit of a surprise to some people!

Ideal for school concerts, for school guitar lessons and for an adult ensemble with limited experience.

As with all well-established public domain Folk Songs, there is a plethora of versions - countless changes to the rhythm, to the mix of verse and chorus, and to the actual words themselves. So here’s another one to add to the collection - my arrangement for 3 early intermediate guitars.

Ideal for a mixed ability trio or large ensemble, Guitar 3 plays a steady bass line against which the syncopated tune can work its magic. The tune, on Guitar 1, goes up to top E on fret 12, but it’s comfortable under the fingers. Guitar 2 provides both a countermelody and some cheeky imitation.
