Guitar,Instrumental Duet - Level 4 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1275335

By Dire Straits. By Mark Knopfler. Arranged by Derek Hasted. Film/TV,Pop. 14 pages. Derek Hasted #867218. Published by Derek Hasted (A0.1275335).

LOCAL HERO - WILD THEME - 2 GUITARS Performance Version

Primarily for classical guitar but also suits acoustic or electric guitars.

Derek Hasted writes Rightly described as an astonishingly beautiful piece, this music from the film Local Hero actually features twice on the soundtrack album, in different keys with different solo instruments.

My arrangement for classical guitar exploits the soft tones of the nylon strings and works well at a slightly more modest pace compared to the original. I’ve taken the theme from the closing soundtrack version, where the melody is clear and powerful. Each player takes the lead part in turn, and my arrangement includes one or two little bits of Mark Knopfler’s quasi-improvised variations on the tune.

There’s left hand fingering in a few places where the accompaniment is only comfortable in one position. There are no dynamics, but the changing texture of the accompaniment creates the illusion of dynamic changes and you are welcome to add phrasing and dynamics to make the performance “yours”.

This enjoyable concert item has a wonderfully captivating melody that the audience will be humming all the way home...

My duet arrangement comes in 2 formats...
This one is a performance version (in which the workload is shared equally and there’s an effortless switching of parts in the middle), set in score only, for two advanced intermediate players.
A separate arrangement (for student and teacher) comprises a student melody line (set in score and score+tab) and an arpeggio teacher's accompaniment, set in score only.
The student line is early intermediate, and the teacher's part is advanced intermediate.
To find the other version easily, visit my website (below) and look for my list of guitar duets.

I hope you enjoy playing this piece!

Guitar,Instrumental Duet - Level 3 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1285298

Composed by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman. Arranged by Derek Hasted. Film/TV. 21 pages. Derek Hasted #876414. Published by Derek Hasted (A0.1285298).

FEED THE BIRDS (from Mary Poppins) - GUITAR DUET
For Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar

Derek Hasted writes This delightful melody features in the film “Mary Poppins”, where its beauty, simplicity and elegance really make this humble piece shine out.

My arrangements for two guitars include all the verses and the instrumental break, wrapped up in two accessible arrangements that feel comfortable for both players.

There are two arrangements in this one edition...

The student/teacher version gives one player the vocal line - one note at once - and the other player an accompaniment comprising chords, arpeggios and melody.

The performance version swaps roles at phrase boundaries, giving more interest for players and audience alike, and which makes the two parts equal in standard.

I have included some fingering for the accompaniment so that it’s clear which positions are used, and there are skeleton dynamics that reflect the different textures in the arrangement. Please feel free to add more to make the performance yours.

I hope you enjoy playing this lovely and moving piece!

SKU: A0.797798

LAST OF THE SUMMER WINE - FLUTE and GUITAR DUET
For Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.

Derek Hasted writes This charming piece has become incredibly well-known in the UK as the theme tune to the TV series of the same name - one of the UK’s longest running comedies.

The music elegantly captures the calm of country life and the simplicity of times gone by, and makes for a refreshing and accessible concert item whether you know the original music or not.

The guitar part is all in first position with just a few straightforward barré chords that are comfortable and easy to reach. The rather scary-looking Gb major chord at the end is enharmonically correct - it’s based on a flattened second to the final key of F. But guitarists will probably prefer to think of it as F# major, which is a familiar chord in guitar repertoire, and there’s no need for a barré for this one either!

This music is set in the key of the original TV soundtrack.

I hope you enjoy playing this piece!

By The Smiths. By Johnny Marr and Steven Morrissey. Arranged by Derek Hasted. Pop. 14 pages. Derek Hasted #930328. Published by Derek Hasted (A0.1345389).

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE (The Smiths) - accessible piece for 2 GUITARS
Intended for classical guitar, though sometimes it gets listed erroneously under electric guitar.
Both parts are supplied in “Notation only” and “Notation + TAB”

Derek Hasted writes This song burst back into my consciousness when it was played as a Viennese Waltz in the BBC TV program “Strictly Come Dancing”.

The ponderous, downbeat, original became light, inspiring, uplifting and very beautiful.

Here’s the version that was on TV - the same key as the original but slightly shorter.

One guitar takes the tune, the other (with the bottom string tuned to D) takes the accompaniment - there is really no seamless way to swap roles partway through, so as well as a concert piece it’s an excellent Student/Teacher duet to teach some rhythms that are unexpected.

I hope you enjoy playing this piece!

SKU: A0.797796

Composed by Traditional Welsh Song. Arranged by Derek Hasted. Folk,Multicultural,World. Score and parts. 23 pages. Derek Hasted #6056615. Published by Derek Hasted (A0.797796).

WATCHING THE WHEAT - GUITAR TRIO or LARGE ENSEMBLE
For Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.

Derek Hasted writes This charming Welsh song, Bugeilio'r Gwenith Gwyn, is a three verse song tinged with sadness.

There are two versions of my arrangement in this one edition.

The first is in conventional “SATB style”, where the three guitars play tune, harmony and bass lines. It would suit a mixed ability ensemble where the tune player is comfortable to move up the neck.

The second rotates the roles so that each player takes a different role in each verse and each player has the tune at one point. It would suit a more evenly matched ensemble as the tune deserves a consistent tone and volume across the three verses.

The two versions share the same notes.

There’s no fingering on the score (except in a few arpeggio sections where there is a chance to minimise finger movements). This is because a more skilled ensemble might enjoy taking the parts up the neck to achieve a rounder and more lyrical tone,

I hope you enjoy playing this piece!

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE (The Smiths) - accessible piece for FLUTE and GUITAR
Intended for classical or acoustic guitar, though sometimes it gets listed erroneously under electric guitar.

The ponderous, downbeat, original became light, inspiring, uplifting and very beautiful.

Here’s the version that was on TV - the same key as the original but slightly shorter.

The flute takes the tune, the guitar (with the bottom string tuned to D) takes the accompaniment.

It’s ideal for an inexperienced duo - the tune, believe it or not, only uses 5 different notes!

The use of 6=D tuning for the guitar dramatically reduces the number of barré chords and makes the guitar part much easier on the left hand.

I hope you enjoy playing this piece!

SKU: A0.510131

By Eddy Grant. By Eddy Grant. Arranged by Andrea La Rose. Contemporary. Score and parts. 16 pages. Published by Andrea La Rose (A0.510131).

Lovingly transcribed and arranged for 4-6 melodic instruments + drums.

• Melody and harmony parts for all standard band and orchestral instruments, plus drums.

• Chords included in every part, to encourage use of song as a vehicle for improvisation.

• In original key, so you can play along with the recording.

As a young musician, I often had a hard time finding music for me and my friends to play together. Small wonder, when I was a flutist and my closest friends in band played trumpet, baritone sax, and clarinet. Who writes for that combination?

Later, as a music teacher, I would either be approached by students in the same kind of situation or I would have an after-school ensemble consisting of something like 3 flutes, 2 alto saxes, 4 pianists, 5 drummers, a guitar, a viola, and an accordion. Now, really. Who writes for THAT combination?!

Since I am also a composer (who often finds herself writing for similarly odd instrumentation), I would simply arrange music for that combination. But not every teacher or student is comfortable with doing that or has the time to. Finally, I am sharing with you all the fruits of my labor. Let friends play with friends! Let people pick parts that they are comfortable with! Let’s play some music we love!
