Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827). Piano Sonata No. 8 in C minor, op. 13, commonly known as Pathétique, was published in 1799, though written the year before, when the composer was 28 years old. Beethoven dedicated the work to his friend Prince Karl von Lichnowsky. Although commonly thought to be one of the few works to be named by the composer himself, it was actually named by the publisher, who was impressed by the sonata's tragic sonorities, to Beethoven's liking.

J.S. Bach (1685-1750) wrote a series of 24 compositions, one for each major and minor key, and he called it “The Well Tempered Clavier,� which was a keyboard type instrument. The “Prelude in C� has been transcribed by a number of people for classical guitar.  It is basically a beautiful chord progression with a picking pattern.  About 110 years later the French composer, Charles Gounod, added a melody to it and called it “Ave Maria.� It became known as the “Bach-Gounod Ave Maria,� and you can often hear it played as a duet for flute and piano. 

Tarrega actually transcribed it for classical guitar in the late 1800s but you would need virtuoso skills to play it. As playability is always a priority in my arrangements I made some compromises.

I kept the melody and chord progression and, to the extent I could, the bass notes.  But the voicing, those notes between the bass and melody that were real important to Bach, I just let fall where they may and used common guitar chord forms.

The end result Is beautiful, recognizable, and quite playable.

This fingerstyle version of O'Carolan's composition, Lady Blayney, aka Planxty Lady Blayney, was arranged in the key of G to take advantage of OPEN G tuning flavors. Putting a capo on the third fret puts the arrangement in the key of Bb, but feel free to place the capo wherever you like. Place to taste! The capo adds nice sustain and a harp-like quality. The audio clip is in Bb (capo 3). This tune is typically in the key of C among harpists. It's also typically done very quickly (sprightly) but slowing it down does no harm! But I'm no purist! Enjoy! This one is for lovers of OPEN G guitar.

This is a Classical Guitar arrangement of intermediate level difficulty.  It is first played in an unusual style in the key of G with melody in the bass and harmonized with arpeggios that make use of open strings all up the neck. The melody is then repeated with a more conventional chord melody type arrangement in the key of C.

This Prelude, from ‘cello suite No 1 (BWV 1007) is as Bach wrote it. No changes have been made to adapt it for guitar in this version. In order to perform it, you will need to re-tune your guitar though. Drop the bass down two tones to a low C. Then tune from the 7th fret to the next string which is dropped by one tone to G. D remains the same, but string 3 has to go up a tone to A. Don’t worry, this won’t damage your guitar. Higher tension strings work slightly better (I use D’Addario EJ46) and I think a cedar front also sounds better, to give a more ‘cello-like sound.
