Small Ensemble Bassoon,Clarinet,Flute,Trombone,Trumpet - Level 4 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.869389

Composed by Thomas Oboe Lee. 20th Century,Baroque,Classical,Contemporary,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 39 pages. Thomas Oboe Lee #431995. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869389).

I was in the midst of composing this octet for Eric Hewitt and the Boston Conservatory Wind Ensemble when I heard that Gunther Schuller died, on Sunday June 21, 2015. Gunther was my first composition teacher when I was a graduate student at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. On impulse I decided to redirect this work to Gunther Schuller, in memoriam. The title is Requiem Octet. All the melodies in the octet are coupled with the Latin text from the requiem.

There are eight movements.
1. Requiem aeternam ...
2. Dies irae, dies illa ...
3. Tuba mirum ...
4. Recordare ...
5. Confutatis maledictis ...
6. Lacrimosa ...
7. Libera me ...
8. In paradisum ...

RIP, Gunther Schuller, 1925-2015.

Composed by Thomas Oboe Lee. 20th Century,Classical,Contemporary,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 78 pages. Thomas Oboe Lee #3112103. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869525).

Steve Laven, cellist with the Boston Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra, contacted me a month ago and asked if I would be interested in writing a work to help celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the founding of the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra. I said, Sure!!! He said it would be nice if I would consider a concerto grosso in which the principal players of the orchestra would each get a feature. I agreed that that would be a fine idea.

So, on June 18th, 2017, I started working on it. And since I am on summer vacation from teaching I was able to finished the 557-measure work on July 2nd, fifteen days after I started.

In 2018 just before I made plans to get the work recorded I made some revisions. One major change was that I cut the fourth movement out completely. It is now a mere 482 measures long.

The work is now in three movements.

1. Introduction; Allegro
2. Presto
3. Largo

Duration: ca. 17 minutes.

Bassoon, String Quartet & Piano - Digital Download

SKU: IZ.PDP101

Composed by Wayne Barlow. Score and Parts. 38 pages. Imagine Music - Digital #PDP101. Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.PDP101).

9 x 12 inches.

Barlow's Prelude, Air and Variation, written in 1948, is the first twentieth-century work scored for the combination of bassoon, string quartet, and piano. There are earlier compositions from the Late Classical and Early Romantic eras by Johann Evangelist Brandl, Domenico Cimarosa and others. It is interesting to note that the other notable modern works for this ensemble are also by American composers, specifically Gunther Schuller and Elliott Schwarz. Barlow's harmonic language is much more conservative than that of Schuller and Schwartz, and he does not exploit the bassoonist's potential virtuosity as do the later composers. The work is notable for Barlow's melodic gift and the care with which he varies the harmonic underpinning, as well as the basic structure of the piece. It is a beautiful composition that never fails to garner compliments after it is performed.

Small Ensemble B-Flat Bass Clarinet,Vibraphone,Viola,Violin - Level 4 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.869184

Composed by Thomas Oboe Lee. 20th Century,Baroque,Classical,Contemporary,Romantic Period. Score and parts. With II. 45 pages. Thomas Oboe Lee #30961. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869184).

Program note. When Stefan Hakenberg and Jocelyn Clark asked me to write a piece for their 2001 Cross Sound concert season in Alaska, I immediately wanted to write a piece with the title, I've Got the Munchies. Music inspired by the visual art is not something new. Mussorgsky composed his infamous Pictures at an Exhibition after viewing a memorial exhibition of paintings and drawings by Victor Alexandrovich Hartmann. Gunther Schuller, my teacher and mentor, composed one of his most memorable orchestral pieces entitled, Six Studies on Themes by Paul Klee. In 1997 I wrote a chamber work inspired by the paintings of Pablo Picasso. The work, Yo Picasso, was scored for Bb clarinet, viola, cello and piano. For the Munchies I used as source material prints and paintings by the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch. The work, scored for violin, viola, bass clarinet and vibraphone, is in six movements: I. For The Scream (1893), I used multiphonics in the bass clarinet to convey the anguish and desperation so clearly depicted in that infamous work. The multiphonics were provided to me by the bass clarinetist, Henri Bok. II. Edvard Munch was very obsessed by his work, Madonna. He made many versions of it between 1893 and 1902. I made three variations of the Madonna movement. III. Tingel-Tangel (1895) is one of his rare prints in which gloom or misery is not the theme. It depicts a stage full of dancing girls. So, I wrote some dance hall music. IV. I wrote a lullaby for The Sick Child (1896). V. The Dance of Life (1899-1900) is a strange picture. The scene is of a party, but no one seems to be happy. I wrote a demented waltz for the scene. VI. The Sun (1909-1916) is one of Munch's last paintings. It shows the rising sun over a peaceful horizon. NB: This is a transposed score. Numbers in the score next to multiphonics refer to those found in Henri Bok's book, New Techniques for the Bass Clarinet. Numbers without asterisks refer to multiphonic fingerings in Table 6; those with asterisks refer to multiphonic tremolos in Table 7.

I've Got the Munchies (2001) for violin, viola, bass clarinet in B-flat and vibraphone.
