Augustine (A0.837240).       Modest Mussorgsky (1839-1881) composed his Pictures at an Exhibition -- A Remembrance of Viktor Hartmann in 1874 as a suite of ten pieces (with a recurring Promenade) for piano, representing paintings by Hartmann. The Bydlo section depicted cattle or oxen slowly pulling a cart with enormous wheels. Maurice Ravel orchestrated this section with the high solo given to the French tuba in C (pitched a whole step above the Bb euphonium).  The present arrangement gives the melody to the euphoniums, and changes the key from the ungainly G# minor (five sharps) to Bb minor (5 flats). The tempo is very slow, with an eighth-note at 90, at which speed the piece takes about 3 minutes to play.  The highest pitches are a high Bb for Euphoniums 1 and 2, and the Bb a step under middle C for Tuba 1.  Good high school players should be able to handle this level, which is intermediate (perhaps advanced intermediate). This piece should be a crowd-pleaser, since it showcases the low-brass instruments rarely given solos.  Also, it is a piece that welcomes extra players for both euphoniums and tubas. Parts for both treble- and bass-clef euphoniums are provided.

Published by Daniel S. Augustine (A0.837244).      Blue Skirt Waltz was originally written by Vaclav Blaha (1901-1959), a Bohemian trumpet player and composer. The song’s original name was Cervenou Sukynka (Red Skirt Waltz). He recorded the song in 1944 as an instrumental (although there are Czech lyrics).    In the late 1940s, Frankie Yankovic was reviewing a catalog of Bohemian music and liked the song, but thought that it needed lyrics. He asked the well-known lyricist Mitchell Parish (of Stardust and Sleighride fame) to write new lyrics, and Parish did so, changing the color of the skirt from red to blue.    In 1949 Frankie Yankovic and His Yanks recorded Blue Skirt Waltz and it reached #22 in the Country charts. Columbia Records eventually sold 2,500,000+ copies of the recording, and it is estimated that over 4,000,000 recordings by all musical groups have been sold.    This arrangement is intended for a small German or polka band, but the instrumentation is flexible:  2 Clarinets, Alto Sax, Tenor Sax (doubling Euphonium), 2 Trumpets, Eb Alto/Tenor Horn (plus Horn in F), Trombone, Euphonium (both bass and treble clef), String Bass, Tuba, Accordion (or Piano), and Drums. Pytala Waltz is based on an old (and slightly bawdy) traditional Polish folk song, variously named Pytala Sie Pani (A Lady Is Asking) or Wszystkie Rybki (Dreamy Fish Waltz). It made its way to the United States in the 1920s and by 1940 to Bremond, Texas. In 1946 a fiddler in the Texas Playboys band recorded it as Westphalia Waltz. Since then it has been recorded by many artists, such as Hank Thompson, Johnny Gimble, Asleep at the Wheel, and Brave Combo. The present arrangement, however, is based on the original Polish folk song Pytala Sie Pani.
