Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quintet - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.943947 Composed by Gustav Holst. Arranged by Clyde Grabski. 20th Century,Christmas,Classical,Romantic Period. 49 pages. Diamond Forest Publishing #4832581. Published by Diamond Forest Publishing (A0.943947). Gustav Holst (1874-1934) was an English composer of Swedish descent. Famous for his orchestral work The Planets, he wrote Christmas Day for his students at an English school to be performed by voices and orchestra during the holiday season. Several familiar Christmas carols are arranged so that two or three may be heard at the same time. The effect of Holst’s polyphonic treatment becomes even more transparent in the instrumentation provided here. The arrangement by Clyde Grabski is for the standard woodwind quintet, but also includes substitute parts for the Oboe (Clarinet) and Bassoon (Bass Clarinet). Scores for both ensembles are included.

RayThompsonMusic #115479. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.503334). Personent hodie is a Christmas carol originally published in the 1582 Finnish song book Piae Cantiones, a volume of 74 Medieval songs with Latin texts collected by Jacobus Finno (Jaakko Suomalainen), a Swedish Lutheran cleric, and published by T.P. Rutha. The carol became more prominent in England after being arranged for unison voices and orchestra in 1916 by Gustav Holst (1874–1934), where in its organ reduction it is often used as a processional hymn in church and cathedral services. Holst's version often forms part of the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, and was last featured in the service broadcast by BBC2 from King's College Chapel, Cambridge in 2011 following the sixth lesson. This arrangement is sometimes referred to as Theodoric in reference to the composer's middle name (Theodore) and, in this setting, is the tune used for Percy Dearmer's hymn God is love, his the care.It is arranged for double wind quintet/bass.

Brass Ensemble - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.810723 Composed by Gustav Holst. Arranged by Ralph Sauer. 20th Century. Score and parts. 91 pages. Gordon Cherry #1955001. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.810723). Mercury, The Winged Messenger, written in 1916 is the 3rd movement of Gustav Holst's iconic 7-movement suite. It is light, flitting and scherzando in style.  Mr. Sauer has used a very ingenious scoring technique for the brass to keep the music flowing for the very fast, long phrases used by the composer. • 4 minutes in length for advanced performers. Instrumentation is for: 4 Trumpets in C (Trumpet 1 includes Piccolo in B-flat) 4 Horns 3 Trombones Euphonium (Tenor Tuba), 2 Tubas  Timpani and Glockenspiel Mr. Sauer has also transcribed other selections (also available on this site) from Holst's Planets Suite including: Mars, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn and Uranus.

Saxophone Trio,Woodwind Ensemble Alto Saxophone - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.582122 Composed by Gustav Holst. Arranged by John Gibson. 20th Century,Celtic,Folk,Irish. 16 pages. JB Linear #5755449. Published by JB Linear (A0.582122). Gustav Holst is well known by wind players for his sparkling pieces for wind band. In those he used English folk tunes or tunes he composed having a folk flavor. This piece set by John Gibson for saxophone trio comes from Holst's Toccata for piano based upon the Northumbrian song Newburn Lads. It is 2 minutes long, so one entertaining idea would be to play it slowly first and then increase the tempo each time. This setting can be played by three saxes of the same key, ie. 3 altos, 3 tenors, etc.

Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quintet Bassoon,Clarinet,Flute,Horn,Oboe - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1323763 Composed by Gustav Holst. Arranged by Ray Thompson. 20th Century,Christmas,Religious. 10 pages. RayThompsonMusic #911949. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.1323763). Lullay, mine liking is a Middle English lyric poem or carol of the 15th century which frames a narrative describing an encounter of the Nativity with a song sung by the Virgin Mary to the infant Christ. The refrain is an early example of an English lullaby; the term lullaby is thought to originate with the lu lu or la la sound made by mothers or nurses to calm children, and by or bye bye, another lulling sound (for example in the similarly ancient Coventry Carol)There are a number of surviving medieval English verses associated with the birth of Jesus which take the form of a lullaby, of which this is probably the most famous example. Written by an anonymous hand, the text is found uniquely in Sloane MS 2593, a collection of medieval lyrics now held in the British Library. My arrangement is transcribed from Gustav Holst's setting of the text, which he calls Lullay, My Liking. It is number 2 from Holst's 4 Carols for Unaccompanied Choir Op.34Arranged wind quintetThe solo verses are played by oboe, flute, clarinet, oboe and bassoon together and finally horn. The refrain has been arranged in a differnt instrumental line up each time it is played.
