Gabriel Fauré (1845 – 1924) was a French composer, organist, pianist and teacher. He was one of the foremost French composers of his generation, and his musical style influenced many 20th-century composers. Among his best-known works are his Pavane, Requiem, Sicilienne, nocturnes for piano and the songs Après un rêve and Clair de lune. Although his best-known and most accessible compositions are generally his earlier ones, Fauré composed many of his most highly regarded works in his later years, in a more harmonically and melodically complex style.

The iconic Italian songs have served as the foundation for countless singers for over a hundred years.  My settings are an accessible alternative and will provide teachers with new tools for their students’ technical and musical advancement.  They offer a welcome change both melodically and harmonically and many have a limited range with a comfortable tessitura. Most of the songs are brief, lasting around two minutes.  Another attractive feature is the inclusion of a literal English translation directly above the Italian.  I believe these songs will be successful for auditions and in recital settings, both informal and formal.  My hope is that over time, these 24 Italian Songs and Arias for 21st Century Singers will take their place beside the originals for the establishment of a solid vocal technique.

According to one reviewer, this is a beautiful setting of the 12th Century words - I could not possibly comment. Starting in F minor with a harmonically open Tenor and Bass duet, the tune is repeated, with slight timing changes, by Soprano and Alto. Moving into A-flat major, the full choir picks up the energy and the piece finishes with the triumphant Deo Gracias. Although there is a fairly wide tessitura for the top 3 parts, this is a very approachable piece. Very effective in a darkened church at the start of a Lessons and Carols service.  Now re-set with minor amendments in Musescore.  With thanks to the Thanet Chamber Choir for the recording of this pieced.

Return Tickets is a two-movement work that presents the audience with two short, musical journeys. Both movements rely on slowly unfolding processes that gradually break the starting musical material and then, over time, re-forge a new version of that opening music. In this way, it presents two cyclic journeys for the listener to experience. This work is somewhat challenging for the ensemble and is also more complex harmonically. As a result, it would be most suitable for somewhat experienced or adventurous concert-goers. The score is written for two trumpets, horn, trombone and bass trombone, though the bass trombone part would also be suitable for tuba. The ‘Divertimento giocoso’ by Harald Genzmer created in 1960 is scored for two woodwind instruments (flutes, recorders or transverse flute and oboe) as solo instruments opposed to the string orchestra. The composer, whose work suits the amateur music-making very much in many respects, succeeded in creating a tonal arrangement that is individual in style. In the first movement, this rhythmically very lively, thematically clearly visible and harmonically interesting though not revolutionary work presents the strings and the solo instruments often entering canonically with an easily remembered -seventh motif; in the second movement, it leads a melody dying away a long time to a dynamic climax, adds harmonic cross relations to a scherzo moving in dance style and closes with a lively vivace movement.“ (Das Liebhaber-orchester).

Daniel Steenson's meditative piano setting of Samuel Crossman's text My Song Is Love Unknown reflects upon the beauty and mystery of Christ's atonement for the sinner. Read Crossman's unique text at hymnary.org. This colorful arrangement of J. Baptiste Calkins' wistful tune features a flowing LH ostinato background leading to sonorous arpeggi. The melodic layer must clearly sing above the accompanying ostinato. Listen for voice-leading in the ostinato, and pedal harmonically with finesse. Let it breathe at m. 14; then respond to the rise-and-fall of the sweeping harmonic gestures during the interlude and coda (mm. 15-23, mm. 39-50). Dynamics marked pp or ppp should give a parenthetical effect (these measures should be heard within the surrounding envelope of sound).
