März 1979 anstelle eines Essays eine Anzahl von Gedichten geschrieben, die als Marginalien zu seinem visionären Ballett-Libretto zu verstehen sind. Für den Chorzyklus hat er noch einige weitere Gedichte hinzugefügt. Ich habe aus beiden Materialien eine Auswahl getroffen und sie im Sommer 1983 während eines langen Lehraufenthaltes in Tanglewood, Mass., in Musik gesetzt, mit Ausnahme von zwei Sätzen, die schon existierten, und von denen 'Epitaph' 1982 in Kindberg, Steiermark, als Teil eines Requiems für den Arbeiterdichter Walter Buchebner durch den ORF-Chor uraufgeführt wurde, während das andere 'Pressed by the weight of...' durch den Chor der Musikhochschule Köln als Zeil einer von AIDA organisierten Solidaritätskundgebung für die argentinischen desaparecidos aufgeführt wurde. - Hans Werner Henze.

Und nicht nur um den Gesamttitel des Zyklus' (der hiermit geschlossen ist) beibehalten zu können mit seiner klaren Beziehung zu Richard III, sondern auch wegen meiner Anhänglichkeit an Shakespeares Gestalten, oder doch einige von ihnen, deren musikalisches Porträt ich zu machen mich auch in der zweiten, ganz anders gebildeten Sonate, bemüßigt gefühlt habe. Aguecheek (Bleichenwang) gehört zu den Lieblingsgestalten meiner Braunschweiger Studentenzeit. Vielleicht war es nicht nur Shakespeare, sondern war es auch der Regisseur und der Bleichenwang einer Inszenierung im dortigen Theater, so gegen 1943, die mich veranlassten keine Vorstellung davon zu verpassen. - Hans Werner Henze.

November 1969 by the Cuban National Orchestra under my direction. This symphony reflects not only the excited atmosphere of awakening during those years but also my efforts to include in the composition the large number of new human and artistic stimuli that I experienced at that time. So the banjo starts to play a Vietnamese song of freedom (Stars in the Night), later the first bars of Mikis Theodorakis hymn of freedom is heard. The second movement is based on the poem Fe de erratas (errata sheet) by Miguel Barnet. In the original version, the three parts of the symphony merge without interruption. In the revised version, I separated them to make it easier for the audience to register the caesuras which are also internal caesuras as regards content. Apart from strengthening the string sound, the most significant alternation in comparison to the first version is that I fully composed all of the aleatoric passages and pitches which originally were to be freely improvised as was the fashion at that time. In der ersten Niederschrift meiner Oper König Hirsch (1953-1956) bestand der Schluss des zweiten Akts aus einem mythischen Gespräch zwischen dem Protagonisten und der Natur. Heinz von Cramer und ich nannten dies Die Waldsymphonie. In der Tat enthält dieser Abschnitt alle formalen Kennzeichen einer Symphonie, es gibt eine Einleitung, einen Sontatensatz, ein liedhaftes Adagio, ein Scherzo mit Trio und eine Finale mit Rondeelementen. Es ist auf dem Theater nie oder doch nur fragmentarisch gegeben worden. Bei der neuen (Il Re Cervo genannten) Fassung die ich 1962 schrieb, wurde diese Waldsymphonie ganz ausgeklammert, und ich schrieb sie zu einem reinen Orchesterstück um. Die thematische Arbeit der Komposition ließ es leicht erscheinen, die vokalen Partien in instrumentale zu verwandeln, dies folgerte Änderungen in der Instrumentation, verschiedene Umgruppierungen in den Farben, kurz alles was nötig war, um die Musik für den Konzertsaal herzurichten. Obwohl Zäsuren zwischen den einzelnen Abschnitten bestehen und deutlich zu hören sind, und obwohl jeder seine eigene Struktur, sein eigenes thematisches Leben hat, ließ ich es bei den fließenden Übergängen des Originaltextes bewenden, so dass das Werk in einem Satz, ohne Unterbrechung abläuft. - Hans Werner Henze.

The story is set in Cologne and its surroundings and casts a light on Germany in the Seventies: estrangement, destruction of the environment, triumph of the middle classes, use of force by the police. The music comments on these circumstances, rather than describing them. Everything that sounds soft and sentimental refers to Katharina and her friend who is pursued by the police and suspected of being a terrorist.
