Woodwind, brass and percussion represent Apollo, the god-sent Master of the Muses who has handed over to Orpheus the Power of Music. The (opposite) sound world of Orpheus is made of stringed instruments: the guitar, reaching back into classical history, contains the basic intervals of Orpheus' music in this context, harp and harpischord represent further technical and harmonic developments of the literature for plucked instruments, consequently their music shows more developed aspects, more elaborate variations, of the basic material. Telemanns Quartett in e-Moll aus den „Pariser Quartetten“ von 1736 für Flöte, Violine, Violoncello und Basso continuo erhält durch eine notengetreue Übertragung auf ein Orchester ein neues Klanggewand und wird schattierungsreicher. Das Stück behält seinen tänzerischen, grazilen und leichten Charakter und lebt zugleich von trunkener Klangsinnlichkeit.

In the original, the aria - here rescored for the orchestra alone - is sung by the protagonist (tenor) who yearns to return to the woods, to nature, to the origins of his animal existence. The rondo is set in a very fast dance tempo (a Tarantella?) and is in three parts: the first one is cheerful and comic, the second one lyrical, almost romantically so, whereas the third one is impetuous and dramatic. The story is set in Cologne and its surroundings and casts a light on Germany in the Seventies: estrangement, destruction of the environment, triumph of the middle classes, use of force by the police. The music comments on these circumstances, rather than describing them. Everything that sounds soft and sentimental refers to Katharina and her friend who is pursued by the police and suspected of being a terrorist.
