I Will Give Thanks to the Lord was composed in 1998 and is intended as a more contemporary option to the sung liturgy associated with the mainstream Christian church, while still maintaining the integrity of traditional liturgical elements. This setting is scored for handbells, two C instruments which double the voices, piano (or electronic keyboard), and bass guitar. The music may be performed with one or more instruments missing as frequently happens for church services. The file contains full score, instrumental parts, and a vocal only which may duplicated for congregational use. The complete setting is also available in a simplified version for piano only. Much of the liturgy is in the form of Call and Response, that is, a music leader sings a phrase and the congregation responds, often repeating the initial phrase exactly. There are two versions for the Nunc Dimittis, the congregational response following Holy Communion. The first is a paraphrase of Simeon’s exclamation at seeing the child Jesus. The second is the traditional text as found in Luke 2 with accompaniment on organ only.

Originally set for SATB voices, this original setting of the well-known Catherine Winkworth translation of a text by Martin Luther is here re-arranged for two-part mixed voices and is well within the abilities of even the smallest church choirs. In the natural minor mode, it has mild dissonance but is not difficult to intone. Care must be taken to not sharp the leading tone. It would make a wonderful addition to a church's Lenten or Reformation repertoire. This would be a welcome addition to the library with minimal voices. It would also work as a duet.

Piano part isn’t difficult at all, save for the very challenging written out solo. You can always improvise an easier solo over the LH.

The first verse is for unison male voices, the second verse becomes somewhat more independent for all four parts, the third verse is in a loose canon form, and the final verse is again more independent with progressively closer harmony as the piece evolves. Thus it would provide a good challenge for the young choir but should be accessible for ensembles with at least modest abilities. It would make a wonderful addition to any school or community program.

They were conceived as a unit, i.e. some material is thematically related. The cycle is in arch form - pieces one (Out of the Depths) and six (Be Near Me, Precious Savior) are edited versions of German chorales, both of which have ties to Hassler and Protestant Germany and which have similar cadences. Pieces two (Lamb of God) and five (When Jesus Wept) are arrangements of works utilizing modal dissonance in juxtaposition, number two being another traditional German chorale, number five a familiar melody by Billings. Pieces three (Hosanna! and four (Jerusalem) are original works which require multiple divisi and also employ significant dissonance. Each of the pieces are available and may be performed separately.
