Three familiar carols for the Christmas season are here arranged for SB voices and piano. Two settings of Away in a Manger (Murray and Kirkpatrick) are juxtaposed with the Polish carol Infant Holy, Infant Lowly. The choral writing is very accessible for any choir of modest ability and the piano accompaniment is generally supportive of the voices. The final verse which uses both the Murray and Kirkpatrick melodies simultaneously could be sung a capella or with accompaniment. This not-too-difficult arrangement for choirs with limited voices would make a lovely addition to your holiday concert or church service. It would also work as a duet.

They were conceived as a unit, i.e. some material is thematically related. The cycle is in arch form - pieces one (Out of the Depths) and six (Be Near Me, Precious Savior) are edited versions of German chorales, both of which have ties to Hassler and Protestant Germany and which have similar cadences. Pieces two (Lamb of God) and five (When Jesus Wept) are arrangements of works utilizing modal dissonance in juxtaposition, number two being another traditional German chorale, number five a familiar melody by Billings. Pieces three (Hosanna! and four (Jerusalem) are original works which require multiple divisi and also employ significant dissonance. Each of the pieces are available and may be performed separately.

One of the most vivid and cherished memories I have while growing up is of Sunday mornings, going to church, sitting in the same pew each week with my grandmother, hearing and singing the beautiful hymns of our faith, and then returning home to the aroma of beef slowly roasting in the oven. My father directed the church choir, my mother and older brothers sang in the choir, so the wonderful music of our faith was instilled in me from an early age. This medley, and others in the series, are arrangements of many of my favorite hymns from those early years, many of which have been lost in more recent editions. For this series, I have elected to use the older texts as that is the way they were first written and the way I first learned them. There is a reverence and beauty in the language enriching the vocal/choral tone which, I believe, is lost in contemporary, conversational, or politically correct syntax. I shudder to think of the day when a penitential phrase such as Hear thou my prayer, O Lord is rendered as Hey, God-dude, listen up - I'm talkin' atcha! I have also opted not to include the many wonderful hymns and carols which are associated with the major festivals of Christmas and Easter as those are commonly found in other collections. A caveat: I have no delusions, and I offer no pretenses, that these settings are great art. They are simply expressions of faith which I hope may bring a small measure of joy to other church musicians. The general concept of each medley is to present the hymn, often in its original chorale form, and then vary its harmony or texture. The hymns in this set include Holy, Holy, Holy, For All the Saints, and A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.

Written the month following the tragic events of 9/11, it is a reflection of the chaotic times in which we live. Originally written for SATB chorus and strings, Dona Nobis Pacem (Grant Us Peace) is a prayer for peace to the loving God of all people, that out of our current discord peace and harmony may come to all humanity. In this setting a string quartet plays what was originally the choral part. It can also be played by a fuller ensemble creating a double string orchestra arrangement. The work is in three sections (ABA) with a coda. Throughout these sections the melody wanders in search of a harmonious resting point. In the B section the quartet and strings part ways and resonate increased dissonance. The second A section exactly duplicates the first. The work concludes with an ever-increasing sense of harmonious repose. The listener may hear occasional reflections of Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings or Pavane for a Dead Princess by Maurice Ravel. Dona Nobis Pacem was premiered as a choral work in May 2003 by the combined choirs of the John Duss Music Conservatory, Duluth MN, and Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Superior WI, under the direction of the composer. It is purely coincidental that there are 191 measures in the work......the numbers in the date of 9/11. Contains full score and parts.

The first verse is for unison male voices, the second verse becomes somewhat more independent for all four parts, the third verse is in a loose canon form, and the final verse is again more independent with progressively closer harmony as the piece evolves. Thus it would provide a good challenge for the young choir but should be accessible for ensembles with at least modest abilities. It would make a wonderful addition to any school or community program.
