For the choral musician, the a capella motets of the late Medieval and Renaissance periods, some well-known and others less so, comprise some of the richest and most beautiful works of choral literature. Unless otherwise indicated, the pieces in this collection are all set for a standard string quartet of 2 violins, viola, and cello, instruments most closely able to mimic the inflections of the human voice. The intent of these arrangements is to enable the string musician to experience a genre perhaps less familiar, from the relatively simple yet sublime homophonic piece, to the varying degrees of rhythmic complexity of polyphonic works and their juxtaposed interplay of duple and triple rhythmic figures. With the purchase of this collection, permission is granted to photocopy parts as needed. Vocal breath marks (‘) above the staff are meant to serve as guides in phrasing. In keeping with the period, no dynamics are indicated, and tempo markings and slurs are only suggestions. As years come and go, one increasingly recalls memories of earlier times. One of the most vivid and cherished memories I have while growing up is of Sunday mornings, going to church, sitting in the same pew each week with my grandmother, hearing and singing the beautiful hymns of our faith, and then returning home to the aroma of beef slowly roasting in the oven. My father directed the church choir, my mother and older brothers sang in the choir, so the wonderful music of our faith was instilled in me from an early age. This medley, and others in the series, are arrangements of many of my favorite hymns from those early years, many of which have been lost in more recent editions. A caveat: I have no delusions, and offer no pretenses, that these settings are great art. They are simply expressions of faith which I hope may bring a small measure of joy and comfort to other technically challenged yet serviceable pianists such as myself. The general concept of each medley is to present the hymn, often in its original chorale form, and then vary its harmony or texture. The hymns in this set include My Faith Looks Up to Thee, Dear Lord and Father of Mankind, and Nearer My God to Thee.

This lovely piece is an arrangement for SB chorus and piano of the solo lied by Franz Schubert Der gute Hirt, D. 449. Schubert's original German text was a poetic interpretation of Psalm 23; here it is given the more traditional Biblical treatment. The choral writing is not difficult and is fairly straightforward block harmony. This would be a welcome addition to the library with minimal voices. It would also work as a duet. It is also available in arrangements for expanded voices.

I have also opted not to include the many wonderful hymns and carols which are associated with the major festivals of Christmas and Easter as those are commonly found in other collections. These two short anthems for Palm/Passion Sunday can be sung in a variety of 2 part combinations with piano accompaniment. They were originally conceived as part of a contemporary liturgy as a Sanctus/Benedictus and Agnus Dei, but are here adapted for ensemble performance. The Hosanna can be sung with a solo, as originally conceived, in a call and response form, or as a balanced 2 part ensemble. It is best as a Call to Worship or incorporated into the processional Gospel. The Lamb of God juxtaposes the folk melody Wondrous Love. Neither piece is vocally difficult and should be easily accessible to even the modest of ensembles.

Wexford Carol is a wonderful traditional Irish carol which may not be readily familiar. This arrangement for SB voices features independent vocal writing with a lot of canonic imitation. The melody juxtaposes F sharp and F natural as well as B flat and B natural over an open harmonic accompaniment giving a medieval, peasant-like feel. Adding a tambourine, drum, and/or finger cymbal would only enhance the performance. If you're looking for a lesser-known carol for your holiday program, Wexford Carol would be a delightful addition. It would also work as a duet and is available in other expanded voicings.
