Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.719736 Composed by Various. Arranged by Curtis Hanson. Sacred. Octavo. 12 pages. Curtis Hanson #4573109. Published by Curtis Hanson (A0.719736). As years come and go, one increasingly recalls memories of earlier times. One of the most vivid and cherished memories I have while growing up is of Sunday mornings, going to church, sitting in the same pew each week with my grandmother, hearing and singing the beautiful hymns of our faith, and then returning home to the aroma of beef slowly roasting in the oven. My father directed the church choir, my mother and older brothers sang in the choir, so the wonderful music of our faith was instilled in me from an early age. This medley, and others in the series, are arrangements of many of my favorite hymns from those early years, many of which have been lost in more recent editions. For this series, I have elected to use the older texts as that is the way they were first written and the way I first learned them. There is a reverence and beauty in the language enriching the vocal/choral tone which, I believe, is lost in contemporary, conversational, or politically correct syntax. I shudder to think of the day when a penitential phrase such as Hear thou my prayer, O Lord is rendered as Hey, God-dude, listen up - I'm talkin' atcha! I have also opted not to include the many wonderful hymns and carols which are associated with the major festivals of Christmas and Easter as those are commonly found in other collections. A caveat: I have no delusions, and I offer no pretenses, that these settings are great art. They are simply expressions of faith which I hope may bring a small measure of joy to other church musicians. The general concept of each medley is to present the hymn, often in its original chorale form, and then vary its harmony or texture. The hymns in this set include Spirit of God, Descend upon My Heart, Just As I Am, without One Plea, and Savior, Again to Thy Dear Name.

String Ensemble - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.719744 Composed by Many. Arranged by Curtis Hanson. Renaissance. Score and parts. 47 pages. Curtis Hanson #4839401. Published by Curtis Hanson (A0.719744). Hey string players and teachers, are you looking for something different to program or teach your students? This collection of pieces, suitable for beginning and experienced ensembles, may be what you’re looking for. For the choral musician, the a capella motets of the late Medieval and Renaissance periods, some well-known and others less so, comprise some of the richest and most beautiful works of choral literature. The pieces in this collection, arranged for a variety of string ensembles, instruments most closely able to mimic the inflections of the human voice, are of the multi-part motets only. Any plainchant intonations have been omitted. The intent of these arrangements is to enable the string musician to experience a genre perhaps less familiar, from the relatively simple yet sublime homophonic piece, to the varying degrees of rhythmic complexity of polyphonic works and their juxtaposed interplay of duple and triple rhythmic figures. With the purchase of this collection, permission is granted to photocopy parts as needed. In keeping with the period, no dynamics are indicated, and tempo markings and slurs are only suggestions. The performer is free to interpret as desired.  The audio example is of the first and last piece in the collection.

Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quartet - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.719580 Composed by Curtis Hanson. Contemporary. 47 pages. Curtis Hanson #2719. Published by Curtis Hanson (A0.719580). September 11, 2001 has had a profound affect on many people, not the least of which is the composer of this work. Written the month following the tragic events of 9/11, it is a reflection of the chaotic times in which we live. Originally written for SATB chorus and strings, Dona Nobis Pacem (Grant Us Peace) is a prayer for peace to the loving God of all people, that out of our current discord peace and harmony may come to all humanity. In this setting a woodwind quartet plays what was originally the choral part. The work is in three sections (ABA) with a coda. Throughout these sections the melody wanders in search of a harmonious resting point. In the B section the quartet and strings part ways and resonate increased dissonance. The second A section exactly duplicates the first. The work concludes with an ever-increasing sense of harmonious repose. The listener may hear occasional reflections of Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings or Pavane for a Dead Princess by Maurice Ravel. Dona Nobis Pacem was premiered as a choral work in May 2003 by the combined choirs of the John Duss Music Conservatory, Duluth MN, and Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Superior WI, under the direction of the composer. It is purely coincidental that there are 191 measures in the work......the numbers in the date of 9/11. Contains full score and parts.

Choral Choir (2-Part) - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1112712 Composed by Spanish Carol. Arranged by Curtis Hanson. Christmas,Folk,Holiday,Sacred. Octavo. 5 pages. Curtis Hanson #714725. Published by Curtis Hanson (A0.1112712). In this post-pandemic era, demand for octavos for smaller choirs is on the rise. A La Nanita Nana is a lovely Spanish carol probably most well known in the arrangement by Norman Luboff. In this setting for 2 part mixed voices, the baritone line is a hybrid of bass/tenor ranges making it very accessible to a young choir with limited male voices. The treble part sits a little more in the soprano range and requires use of the head register. The only major challenge to the piece is to differentiate between the major and minor keys. Text is given in both Spanish and English allowing for multiple ways to interpret. It would be a welcome addition to any holiday program. It is also available for expanded choral voicing. This would be a welcome addition to the library with minimal voices. It would also work well as a duet.

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.719521 Composed by Curtis Hanson. Christian,Sacred. Octavo. 10 pages. Curtis Hanson #2032827. Published by Curtis Hanson (A0.719521). Nunc Dimittis is a concert setting of Simeon's expression upon seeing the child Jesus before his own death. Set for SATB chorus and organ (orchestral score and parts available separately), it begins in free chant before stating the text in the basses with an original melody. The optional middle section is based on Regina Fryxell's interpretation with permission of Augsburg Fortress. The piece concludes with a grand four-part restatement of the original melody followed by the Gloria Patri. Though perhaps best suited in a concert setting, it could also be sung liturgically, in full or in part, in a worship setting.
