The premier of Charles Gounod’s new five act Opera, Romeo et Juliette, was in Paris on April 27, 1867.  It was an immediate success. In the first act, Juliette’s Nanny encourages her to marry the man her Father has chosen for her. Juliette responds with this famous arietta – singing of her hopes and dreams for her life and of the love she hopes to find. Romeo overhears her singing and falls in love with her.

The original French title is Ah! Je Veux Vivre. Another English title to the arietta is Daydreams.

This uplifting arrangement has both pedal and lever harp versions that may be performed together. They only differ in the pedal/lever markings and occasional grace or harmony notes. There are numerous pedal and lever changes. The dynamics are clearly marked.

There are many songs with this same name which tell of when the Earls of Tyrone and Tyrconnell left Ireland for mainland Europe in 1607. This arrangement uses a traditional, march-like tune that has been used for at least six Christian Hymns.

There is a chromatic in each verse. The lever harp players will need to drop a couple notes in order to make the chromatic. The dynamics and pedal/lever changes are clearly marked.

In 1905, Fritz Kreisler composed a set of three pieces that he called his old Viennese Dance Tunes in honor of his hometown, Vienna. Liebesfreud is the first piece of the set. Quite often, Kreisler performed the set as an encore.

After decades of discussion, musicologists seem to agree that it was Jeremiah Clarke that composed Trumpet Voluntary and not Henry Purcell. In rondo form, this majestic march is a standard in the Baroque repertoire.
