Piano Sonata No. 8 in C minor, Op. 13 - 3rd Movement - Beethoven, commonly known as Sonata Pathétique, was written in 1798 when the composer was 27 years old, and was published in 1799. It has remained one of his most celebrated compositions. Although commonly thought to be one of the few works to be named by the composer himself, it was actually named Grande sonate pathétique (to Beethoven's liking) by the publisher, who was impressed by the sonata's tragic sonorities. Prominent musicologists debate whether or not the Pathétique may have been inspired by Mozart's piano sonata K. 457, since both compositions are in C minor and have three very similar movements. The second movement, Adagio cantabile, especially, makes use of a theme remarkably similar to that of the spacious second movement of Mozart's sonata. However, Beethoven's sonata uses a unique motif line throughout, a major difference from Haydn or Mozart’s creation. This is the original Beethoven arrangement of this sonata. I worked from the original manuscript, in the British Library, so the phrasing and articulations are as authentic as can be. I believe this work translates to woodwinds admirably, and in its original key. The composer said these quartets cost him great toil and mental exertion, and I can testify to the presence of frequent corrections in the MS, even though that which I saw was presumably a fair copy!

Stuttgart, Germany, 1872) moved to St. Petersburg, Russia, to work as a tutor at the age of seventeen. But his love for the music of Haydn and Mozart impelled him to a career in music. He moved back to Germany in 1811, settled in Stuttgart, and remained there for most of his life. The prestigious Cotta music firm published some of his early compositions and sent him to study music in Italy, where he came under the influence of Palestrina's music. In 1821 Kocher founded the School for Sacred Song in Stuttgart, which popularized four-part singing in the churches of that region. He was organist and choir director at the Striftsckirche in Stuttgart from 1827 to 1865. Kocher wrote a treatise on church music, Die Tonkunst in der Kirche (1823), collected a large number of chorales in Zions Harfe (1855), and composed an oratorio, two operas, and some sonatas. William H. This arrangement of Mozart's first string quartet composed between 1770 and 1773 when he was still a teenager and pupil of his father, Leopold, is, nevertheless, a remarkable achievement. The string quartet pioneered by Haydn was still a very new format. The Rondo added in 1773 at the suggestion of Leopold completed the four movements which became the usual format. The movements  - Adagio, Allegro, Menuetto & Trio and Rondo provide fairly equal interest for all four players and this arrangement for flute, oboe, clarinet in A and bassoon of at least intermediate standard. If the oboe part in bar/measures 9/10 of the first movement sounds familiar, Mozart re-used and expanded this in the second movement of his concerto for flute & harp K.299.
