At the Plaza A Holiday in Naples is a five-movement programmatic work for solo piano composed in 2021 by Andrei Hadap. Composed in the late nineteenth century style, it depicts a lone traveller, on holiday, who explores the city of Naples in the same period. Each movement is a short scene that narrates the traveller’s experience during his visit through music. The first movement, At the Carnival, in sonata form, begins with a slow introduction as the traveller sets foot at the pier in the morning. The main allegro begins as he hears the carnival from a distance and proceeds to explore, represented by the scherzando-like figures. Short episodes of tranquillity interrupt the carnival as the traveller, in a reverie, looks out to admire the Neapolitan coastline. The piece ends as the carnival fades out into the distance. Contrasting with the festivities, the traveller encounters A Merchant at the Spinning Wheel, the title of the second movement. This encounter depicts the reality of the poverty-stricken region at the time. Here, the merchant is depicted in a trance-like state, as the monotonous arpeggiated figures at the piano are heard throughout. Later in the piece, we hear the agitated merchant spinning the wheel faster, distracted by the carnival, but eventually calms down towards the end. The third movement, In the Ballroom, the traveller enters a ballroom, observing the dancers from a distance. He finds himself drawn to a young woman, though slightly nervous, whom he invites to dance. In the middle section, we hear the awkwardness between them as they both stumble frequently. Eventually, he regains his composure and the two dance well into the evening. In the fourth movement At the Opera, the traveller then goes to a nearby opera house where he walks in during a love duet between a tenor and soprano. The final movement At the Plaza, the traveller encounters the carnival once again. This time, they are dancing a tarantella, a Neapolitan folk dance depicting the involuntary muscle spasms from a venomous spider bite. The traveller joins in and dances with them until sunrise.

Grieg moreover used Norwegian folk music in his own compositions.  Consequently, he ushered Norwegian music to transnational consciousness. Furthermore, he forged a national musical identity for Norway. It is important to realize that he did this in a manner similar to Jean Sibelius in Finland, and BedÅ™ich Smetana in Bohemia. The play includes, in particular, the famous selection entitled, In the Hall of the Mountain King. In this composition, Grieg indeed depicts the exploits of the scoundrel, Peer Gynt. In one famous episode, for example, Peer steals a bride at her wedding. For this reason, the people chase him, but soon Peer falls, thereupon striking his skull on a boulder. He wakens forthwith in a highland bounded by angry gnomes. Consequently, the music of In the Hall of the Mountain King represents the mad gnomes taunting Peer. German • English.The American composer and pianist Edward MacDowell (1860 1908) is rather unknown in Europe although he had his artistic roots there for he was trained as a pianist in Paris, Stuttgart, Wiesbaden and Frankfurt. After returning to his home country, he worked as a teacher while also being the director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra for eight years. During his studies in Germany, the musician already began to compose songs (with German texts), still in the European tradition. From 1886 he used English lyricism as a basis and preferred a sparing, yet expressive accompaniment of the piano. In his last songs, he placed special emphasis on the declamatory aspect of the text and expanded the harmonic range of his tonal language. Of his 42 solo songs, the present volume contains six titles from three of his song collections: Composed or printed for the first time between 1890 and 1898, these songs are a representative selection from MacDowell's important middle creative period and, without doubt, a valuable addition to the song repertoire.

Then, in the 1840’s he wrote his most famous work - O Holy Night. The original song title was Minuit Chretiens or Cantique de Noël.  Placide Cappeau provided the original song lyrics. The song was first performed in Roquemaure by the opera singer Emily Laurey at midnight mass in 1847. It became very popular among the French, much the way that Silent Night was famous elsewhere. In the 1850’s John S. Dwight, a Unitarian minister and music teacher translated the song into English.   Adolphe Adam In his younger years, Adam studied organ and composition at the Paris Conservatoire. He also played the timpani in the Conservatoire orchestra. Adam used his savings and borrowed money to open a new opera house - the fourth opera house in Paris in 1847. Unfortunately, the Revolution of 1848 forced him to close. He taught composition at the Paris Conservatoire from 1849 until his death in 1856. Placide Cappeau The poet Cappeau was an advocate of the French Enlightenment philosopher Voltaire.  Voltaire was renowned for criticizing the Catholic church, religious intolerance, and dogma in general. Consequently, Cappeau made the Redeemer figure in his song a kind of reformer of injustices, in particular, the problem of original sin. To begin with, people recognized Cappeau’s theology as eccentric, probably even doubtful. Theology In the earlier form of Minuit, the Christ figure descends to intervene with His Father’s plan to punish mankind.  Traditional doctrine pronounces that Christ came from love, not to intervene. This version also declares that Christ appeared to expunge the original sin of Adam. Cappeau removed this part from his poem years later, because he just didn’t believe it.  He preferred to portray Christ as the reformer of disparity and unfairness. Before long, the writer/politician Alphonse de Lamartine referred to the Minuit as the the Marseillaise of religion. He didn't like the ending he wrote, so he trashed the score. Someone in his band rescued it from the trash can. The rest of the band repaired to the baggage car (surely beer was involved in this activity) and secretly rehearsed the new march. They performed it at the band's next concert. It became the most famous (as in, the only one you've ever heard of) of Bagley's compositions and one of the most recognizable American marches. John Phillip Sousa ranked it among the top four in that category, surrounding it, of course, with his own marches. Its trio is regularly played at colors ceremonies. It even pops up in the TubaChristmas version of Jingle Bells. He sold the rights to the arrangement for $25.

The first complete performance was given on 9 January 1904 in the Salle Erard, Paris, by the young Spanish pianist Ricardo Viñes, who was already emerging as the prime interpreter of the new French music of Debussy and Ravel. The first two pieces were completed in 1903, but the third derives from an earlier group of pieces from 1894, collectively titled Images, which remained unpublished until 60 years after Debussy’s death, when they were printed as Images (oubliées). Estampes marks an expansion of Debussy’s keyboard style: he was apparently spurred to fuse neo-Lisztian technique with a sensitive, impressionistic pictorial impulse under the impact of discovering Ravel’s Jeux d’eau, published in 1902. The opening movement, ‘Pagodes’, is Debussy’s first pianistic evocation of the Orient and is essentially a fixed contemplation of its object, as in a Chinese print. This static impression is partly caused by Debussy’s use of long pedal-points, partly by his almost constant preoccupation with pentatonic melodies which subvert the sense of harmonic movement. He uses such pentatonic fragments in many different ways: in delicate arabesques, in two-part counterpoint, in canon, harmonized in fourths and fifths and as an underpinning for pattering, gamelan-like ostinato writing. Altogether the piece reflects the decisive impression made on him by hearing Javanese and Cambodian musicians at the 1889 Paris Exposition, which he had striven for years to incorporate effectively in music. In its final bars the music begins to dissolve into elaborate filigree.Just as ‘Pagodes’ was his first Oriental piece, so ‘La soirée dans Grenade’ was the first of Debussy’s evocations of Spain-that preternatural embodiment of an ‘imaginary Andalusia’ which would inspire Manuel de Falla, the native Spaniard, to go back to his country and create a true modern Spanish music based on Debussyan principles. Debussy’s personal acquaintance with Spain was virtually non-existent (he had spent a day just over the border at San Sebastian) and it is possible that one model for the piece was Ravel’s Habanera. Yet he wrote of this piece (to his friend Pierre Louÿs, to whom it was dedicated), ‘if this isn’t the music they play in Granada, so much the worse for Granada!’-and there is no debate about the absolute authenticity of Debussy’s use of Spanish idioms here. Falla himself pronounced it ‘characteristically Spanish in every detail’. ‘La soirée dans Grenade’ is founded on an ostinato that echoes the rhythm of the habanera and is present almost throughout. Beginning and ending in almost complete silence, this dark nocturne of warm summer nights builds powerfully to its climaxes. The melodic material ranges from a doleful Moorish chant with a distinctly oriental character to a stamping, vivacious dance-measure, taking in brief suggestions of guitar strumming and perfumed Impressionist haze. There is even a hint of castanets near the end. The piece fades out in a coda that seems to distil all the melancholy of the Moorish theme and a last few distant chords of the guitar. â€˜Jardins sous la pluie’ is based on the children’s song ‘Nous n’rons plus au bois’ (We shan’t go to the woods): its original 1894 form was in fact entitled Quelques aspects de ‘Nous n’rons plus au bois’. The two versions are really two distinct treatments of the same set of ideas, but in ‘Jardins sous la pluie’ Estampes the earlier piece has been entirely rethought. The whole conception is more impressionistic, and subtilized. The teeming semiquaver motion is more all-pervasive, the tunes (for Debussy has added a second children’s song for treatment, ‘Do, do, l’enfant do’) more elusive and tinged sometimes with melancholy or nostalgia. In the case of Sicilienne and Rigaudon, it is eighteenth-century French violinist/composer François Francoeur whose name is on the title sheet, though the piece really has nothing to do with Francoeur's style.The piece is a simple and a charming one, however. The Sicilienne is a binary-form miniature that sweeps along on a characteristic dotted rhythm, with a rather melancholy melody. Think old French ballet. The constant 16th notes of the Rigaudon, give it a character quite unlike that of a traditional rigaudon-a cheerful Baroque dance movement in duple meter.

The score is being performed by creating sentences based on the first two pages of the proportional score notation. The conductor determines the entrances and fade outs of the instruments as well the repetition of blocks of music. Dynamics are provided for specific movements and different other sentences could be also created. Could I? Would I? If I Would?  Etc… Duration: approx. 7-10 minutes   Apostolos Paraskevas is a classical guitarist and composer as well as an award-winning film director and producer. He has received multiple international awards for his compositions and was nominated for a Grammy Award. He is the only guitarist ever to have a major orchestral piece performed at Carnegie Hall under the direction of Lukas Foss––and the only musician who has performed there in a Grim Reaper outfit. He was the founder and served for 16 years as the artistic director of the International Guitar Congress-Festival of Corfu, Greece.  He is a voting member of the Recording Academy (Grammy's).   After his undergraduate music studies in Volos he pursued advanced studies in classical guitar with Costas Cotsiolis (diploma, 1990) and Leo Brouwer (Havana 1984, 1988), as well as postgraduate studies in composition with Lukas Foss and Theodore Antoniou (DMA in composition, Boston University, 1998). Paraskevas embarked on a successful career as a guitar soloist and contemporary composer, achieving distinctions in both disciplines: Grammy nomination for Chase Dance (Bridge Records, 1999); first prize for Night Wanderings (Lukas Foss Composition Competition, 2000); first prize for Phygein Adynaton (National Composers Conference, 1997); and numerous prestigious commissions, performances, and publications. Following teaching posts at Northeastern and Boston Universities, Paraskevas has taught since 2001 at the Berklee College of Music in Boston (professor of composition and classical guitar).   His eclectic compositional style arises as an idiosyncratic integration of seemingly conflicting influences – from avant-garde approaches to harmonic structure, form, and timbre, to pop-folk modal and rhythmical concepts – amalgamated into a personal evocative musical language, characterized by rhythmic verve, melodic grace, dramatic (and sometimes unexpectedly humorous) gestures, and ritualistic or theatrical elements. Although born in Bisceglie, Giuliani's center of study was in Barletta where he moved with his brother Nicola in the first years of his life. His first instrumental training was on the cello-an instrument which he never completely abandoned-and he probably also studied the violin. Subsequently, he devoted himself to the guitar, becoming a very skilled performer on it in a short time. The names of his teachers are unknown, and we cannot be sure of his exact movements in Italy.
