In the second century AD, Artemidoro de Daldis (135-200), a very cultured man who had traveled a lot, contemporary of Emperor Marco Aurelio, wrote in Ephesus his work Symbolism of Dreams (Oneirocritica). In it he tried to create a systematic theory for the interpretation of dreams, based on experience. Artemidoro claimed that he had written his work in five volumes by express order of the god Apollo, who had appeared several times in his dreams. In his fascinating book he distinguishes five kinds of dreams: Dream, Vision, Oracle, Appearance and Fantasy. Artemidoro’s book, Op. 63, is a work for guitar in five movements, which take their titles as the kinds of dreams mentioned above: Dream, Vision, Oracle, Appearance and Fantasy. It is an extensive composition, 19 minutes long, and with a great variety of compositional and instrumental techniques: the performer, who is asked for a lot of versatility and imagination, has to play glissandi, harmonics, pizzicati, bells, loops, metric modulations, ordinary and muted strokes, microtones, distortions, various kinds of bumps in the box, etc. The five movements share a special scordature and the same melodic, harmonic and rhythmic material, which is transformed according to the dreamlike atmosphere of the piece, but always maintaining each of the structural elements a recognizable identity. The multiple presences of these essential identities throughout the work articulate the complex form of the Book. I finished the composition of The Book of Artemidoro on April 24, 2006. The work is dedicated to guitarist José Guerola, who premiered it at the Vivanco Palace in Catarroja (Spain), on May 5, 2006.

In the quaint village of Hollybrook, Christmas was a time of joy and togetherness. But this year, a malicious pukwudgie named Bramble planned to spread fear and chaos. On Christmas Eve, as villagers gathered around the grand tree for the annual lighting ceremony, Bramble struck. He made the lights flicker and go out and twisted the ornaments into grotesque shapes. He snuck into homes, swapping sugar for ashes and hiding stockings in unreachable places, casting a dark spell over the village. By morning, Hollybrook was in disarray. Children found their stockings missing, cookies ruined, and the tree ominous in the square. Fear gripped the town. Amidst the chaos, a brave girl named Lucy refused to let fear win. She gathered her friends and ventured into the forest, following eerie footprints. They found Bramble muttering dark incantations under a gnarled tree. Caught in a trap made from holly and mistletoe, Bramble hissed his intentions to spread fear. Lucy, with steely resolve, offered him a chance at redemption. Reluctantly, Bramble agreed. They returned to the village, and with Bramble’s help, dispelled the dark enchantments. The ornaments returned to their beautiful forms, sugar replaced the ashes, and the stockings were found. That night, the tree lit up, and Bramble felt warmth in his heart for the first time. The villagers, initially wary, accepted him as he helped create beautiful ice sculptures, adding magic to the festivities. From that year on, Bramble became part of Hollybrook. His dark nature slowly transformed under the light of friendship and acceptance. Every Christmas, his magic brought extra sparkle to the celebrations, reminding everyone that even the darkest hearts could find redemption through kindness and love.

In fact, there is no comparison. However, my sincere hope is that since I have rendered some of Beethoven’s music as duets, his music is now more readily available to all permitting a greater number of musicians and all the people who hear their performances to come to know and love a bit of the world’s most valuable, breathtaking and beautiful music. Programme Notes: This composition was written to be considered for pairing alongside Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony #3, the Eroica, but can stand on its own virtues as an intense and slow meditation on heroism. The music is like a boiling pot on the stove that’s just began to overflow its bubbles. The first part of the title, kommos, is a Classical Greek term from Attic dramaturgy, literally meaning striking but specifically referring to beating oneself up during lamentation--ripping at the hair, gouging out the eyes--like Oedipus--slapping the forehead, and other acts amid moments of extreme emotional turmoil. For example, from Aeschylus's play Agamemnon, a character bewails: Apollo, Apollo! God of the Ways, my destroyer! For you have destroyed me-and utterly [...]What is this fresh woe [...]what monstrous, monstrous horror, beyond love's enduring, beyond all remedy? And help stands far away! We can easily imagine physical accompaniment to the script; rather than bottling up the pain, the hero lets it all explosively come out.  â€ƒThe second part of the title, When the world moved on, is an epigraph taken from American author Stephen King’s The Dark Tower epic. The primary setting of the novel, a world similar in many ways to our own, is experiencing a dark age where the glorious past is all but a distant memory and all good things are referred to wistfully as occurring, When the world moved on. Yet, the main protagonist, Roland, the last gunslinger, emphasizes that it is not just a figure of speech, but the literal distances between destinations have increased, the positions of the stars have changed, as well as the occurrence of other unnatural phenomena. The world has become a gulf of isolation from all corners. Taken together, this piece is a lamentation for when the world moved on. Truly completed on Yom Kippur during the Covid-19 Pandemic, being unable to fast or go to synagogue, this is my atonement.About the Composer: Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings, with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.

This sonata in three movements is the first of a group of three sonatas for guitar by the Tyrolian composer and mandolin/guitar virtuoso  Leonhard von Call (1767-1815).The source for this edition is the clearly written manuscript of the three sonatas in the Boije guitar music collection of the National Library of Sweden, marked as Gi Boije 615.The manuscript seems to be based on a 1924 publication of the three sonatas by N. Simrock / Musikverlag / Berlin with catalogue number Verlag 763.Although Von Call was a virtuoso instrumentalist, he seems to have focused on teaching amateurs rather than performing. Consequently, much of his music is not of a very demanding nature, but still well composed and well suited to the instruments for which it was written.From about 1798 until his death in 1815 he was quite successful as a composer in Vienna, and  he composed and published about 150 works, mainly chamber music for different combinations and much vocal music with guitar accompaniment.
