Mahler was already planning a late Romantic cantata entitled Das klagende Lied shortly after beginning his studies at the Vienna Conservatory in 1878, for which he conceived a three-part cycle of poems for his own setting. When Mahler completed the score in October 1880, he was already at the beginning of a great conducting career. The quality of the poem could be debated, especially in view of the successful Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen from 1883 and 1884; and yet the ballad, inspired by a mixture of fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm and the poet Ludwig Bechstein, reflects almost the complete range of voices of Mahler's first great creative period, from the songs from Des Knaben Wunderhorn to the Fourth Symphony. At the special request of mezzo-soprano Chrisianne Stotijn and pianist Joseph Breinl, the complete text of the plaintive song was newly set to music. A particular challenge of the new setting of Gustav Mahler's poems consisted for me above all in compromising the genial imperfection of the poetry with a compositional aesthetic that emphasizes precisely the unrhymed, edgy and clichéd as its own quality and does not seek to conceal it. In doing so, it seemed wise and prudent to me, not only for reasons of historical distance(ization), not to implement an intersubjective subjectability to the songs. The serious and ballad-like basic tone was to be preserved, the way in which the text was implemented stems from the idea of a thoroughly pluralistic and therefore stylistic tightrope walk, which in a kind of music about music reflects the relationship to one's own tradition and its changing values and thus repeats the phenomenon of Mahler per se in the context of the 21st century.

In England, it is considered one of the two most popular carols of all time; a 1996 poll ranked it as a tie for second place. To begin with, many thought it was written by Martin Luther, but now the song is considered to be absolutely American. The most common musical arrangements are by William Kirkpatrick (1895) and James R. Murray (1887). The melody was first published, as Luther's Cradle Hymn, by James R. Murray. Then, came a confusing series of explanations about how Martin Luther wrote the song. Murray even went so far as to suggest that Luther wrote it for his children. As a result, the song has become known as simply Mueller. Nobody knows who this Mueller actually is, but the name stuck. Popularity By the 1880’s the cradle song was being performed in church. By the 1990’s the song was becoming the most popular Christmas song of all time. It was sung in school, in church, and at home by nearly everyone. Other musical settings The first musical setting published with the lyrics appeared in the Little Children's Book for Schools and Families (1885). The title was Away in a Manger. This edition is the first one not to attribute the song to Martin Luther.   Charles H. Gabriel was the first arranger to present the third verse. He also composed and published a large number of different arrangements of the song. In one of his settings, he supplies a chorus for each verse with asleep sung in canon. Another prevalent preparation uses the lyrics to the melody Flow Gently, Sweet Afton. Yet another arrangement dating uses the lyrics to an old Normandy Carol.

The original melody was written by Wayne in 1969 as a jingle for a Lego commercial. Vigrass and Osborne, the performers of the original jingle, added lyrics to the song and recorded it for inclusion on their 1972 album Queues. Their interpretation was also released as a single and gained moderate commercial success in Japan, selling more than 100,000 copies and becoming a top-20 hit on the country's record chart. The best-known version is the recording by Justin Hayward from the album Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds. Wayne wanted to include a love song on the album that sounded like Forever Autumn, and he decided that the best course of action was to simply use the original song. Wayne chose Hayward, of The Moody Blues, to sing it saying that he wanted that voice from 'Nights in White Satin'.It was recorded at London's Advision Studios in 1976. The song reached #5 on the UK Singles Chart in August 1978.
