Like his younger compatriot Leopold Koželuh, Johann Baptist Wanhal derived a considerable part of his income from teaching, and his large output of keyboard music – which includes solos, chamber works with keyboard and instructional pieces – reflects this. Along with the usual sets of variations, dances and other small-scale works, he published sonatinas and progressive sonatas for young performers which reveal his experience as teacher and his gift of making the simplest music attractive as well as instructive. Wanhal’s output of solo keyboard music also includes far more complex and ambitious works, among them, several sets of pieces styled “Capriccio”. These works are in essence multi-movement sonatas, their capriciousness largely evident in their discursive first movements which include an element of modest tonal adventure. The works are very attractive, technically demanding yet well within the scope of the many fine amateur fortepianists in Vienna. As part of a campaign to enrich the woodwind quintet repertoire, Kaplan has arranged for woodwind quintet the six preludes and fugues for string trio by Mozart (based on fugues, and some preludes, by J.S. and W.F. Bach, with the addition of four original preludes by Mozart). Around 1782 (as recounted by Mozart in a letter to his father), Mozart used to attend Sunday musicales at the home of Baron van Swieten, who required Bach and Handel to be played by all. Presumably it was to comply with the Baron's wishes that Mozart created these arrangements plus original preludes. The arranger surmises that Mozart's immersion in Bachian counterpoint influenced his own works, which increasingly featured interesting, elaborate, musically and emotionally exciting fugues (such as those in the K.387 string quartet, the Jupiter Symphony, and the Requiem). Given Mozart's genius, it is not all surprising that the fugues he selected are all of great musical interest.Note that in arranging string music for woodwinds, one often finds the English Horn better suited to the tessitura than the oboe. The main challenge is to share the string parts among the wind instruments in such a way as to permit the players to breathe. This the arranger has done, but welcomes feedback from players.

Michael Giacchino, composer for the film, said that the film was different from scene to scene. When you go see a movie about rats, you’re thinking it’s going to be funny and slapstick — but this is an extremely emotional movie. In addition to the score, Giacchino wrote the main theme song, Le Festin, about Remy and his dream to be a chef. Though Bird's initial films were not song-oriented, the necessity to include an original song was to do something different and special, according to Giacchino. The song was the first cue he written for the film. French artist Camille (who was 29 at the time of the film's release) was hired to perform Le Festin after Giacchino listened to her music and realized she was perfect for the song; as a result, the song is sung in French in almost all versions of the film. The song was recorded in Vancouver.
