It was probably written in 1707 when he was 22 years old. It is a Chorale Cantata, a style in which both the text and music are based on a hymn. In this instance, the source was Martin Luther's hymn of the same name which became a main Easter hymn in German Lutheranism.Regis Bookshar has transcribed and arranged three selections based on this hymn tune, two from Bach's Cantata No.   4, BMV   4, and also his Chorale Prelude, BMV 625. They may be played individually or as a trilogy and each movement is more complex than the prevous one. The first selection in this trilogy is the Chorale, Christ lag in Todesbanden, the final chorus from his Cantata No.   4, a straightforward four-part chorale setting of the hymn (Regis has also added a fifth part). This is followed by Bach's Chorale Prelude, BMV 625, a piece from his Orgelbuchlein (Little Organ Book), a collection of 46 Preludes for organ, written almost exclusively during the 1708-1717 period, while Bach was court organist a Weimar. For the final selection, Regis has placed the polyphonic and imitative chorus, Es war ein wunderlicher Krieg, da Tod und Leben rungen (It was a strange battle, that death and life waged), which Bach had placed in the middle of his Cantata No.   4.This arrangement is for a Brass Quintet, consisting of 2 Bb Trumpets, 1 French Horn and 2 Trombones. My goal is to create something that sounds beautiful as a standalone piece of music, but most importantly, that it actually makes pianistic sense. Sometimes I even hide exercises in the arrangements that I want a student to work on. All of my arrangements are usually made for a specific student, so the results will always vary.This arrangement was made for a late beginner student, Primary III, working on Level 1-2 of the Alfred's Masterwork Classics series. He loves his video games! As with many arrangements, I often simplify rhythms so that the melodies are more understandable to students. Then they completely ignore my simplified rhythm and play what they know by ear. I don't know why I continue underestimating them! So, I have kept a more complicated rhythm for this arrangement. The left hand is mostly blocked fifths with a few deviations for contrast. I recommend some use of pedal, but not necessary. When the main tune returns, left hand plays fifths in unison with melody--some exceptions. This keeps things very easy and even faster to learn.Pedal and fingering suggestions are included.

I had just begun receiving the main ideas for it when a pianist I know locally, Robert Aston, happened to ask me if I had written anything for piano and string quartet. I believe that Quincie “heard� this and that was the trigger and the door unlocking. Because the next thing I knew I was absolutely engulfed in the writing of this work for the next six months.Like all my works, this one is an emotional journey, and my own nickname for it is Quincie, The Comic Healer. Each movement tells a progressive story of the different stages of a journey through a long period of grief, illness, depression and chronic anxiety. The overall mood of the whole piece is extremely energetic, loving, warm, compassionate and audience friendly, and while there is some heart ache in the middle of the first movement, the work is also extremely comical and hilarious in its third and fourth movements. It has a great sense of slapstick humour alongside the deep ache of grief and unfathomable sadness. Mozart wrote the 5 Divertimenti in 1783 probably for his friend Anton Paul Stadler, the leading performer on the clarinet and basset horn of the day, for whom he also wrote his clarinet concerto. The 5 Divertimenti are all in the key of Bb and all have 5 movements and were intended for three basset horns or two clarinets and bassoon. This arrangement for flute, oboe & clarinet keeps as close to Mozart’s original as possible, the main changes are changes of register to suit the ranges of the new scoring. The inconsistencies in the flagging (or not) of the grace notes have been resolved in accordance with performance practice at the time. Edited dynamics have been placed in parentheses and slurs in broken lines. There are 5 movements, Allegro, menuet & Trio, Adagio, Menuet & Trio & Rondo: Allegro assai. The piece is suitable for all players of about grade 6 A.B.R.S.M. and above and makes an excellent concert item for both formal and informal ocasions.
