Edith is a 13 page advanced intermediate level piece in the key of A major. It is from my album 'The Open Road', a collection of 14 of my solo piano compositions. This is inspired by and dedicated lovingly to the memory of my mother, Edith McCracken, born and raised in Kilmarnock, Scotland. Like this piece, she talked a lot and was both sweet and stormy - and if she had lived to hear it, I think she would’ve really enjoyed this piece. Doc Bradley's Waltz is a 10 page intermediate level piece in the key of F major. It is from my album 'The Open Road', a collection of 14 of my solo piano compositions. This piece initially sprang, as most of mine do, from an improvisation. It was while providing music at the memorial service for my friend David Bradley in 2008 that this piece started flowing through my fingers. As I improvised the prelude, this melody caught hold of me, and in the days following the service, I composed the rest. Marble In My Pocket is a 6 page advanced intermediate level piece in the key of D flat major. It is from my album 'The Open Road', a collection of 14 of my solo piano compositions. This piece is a joining of two separate ideas that were created back in the early 2000s when I was frequently collaborating with my friend, percussionist Alfred Lund. It was Alfred who suggested this title, and, like the idea behind the piece itself, I’ve carried it ever since. Jasper County is a 6 page advanced intermediate level piece in the key of D major. It is from my album 'The Open Road', a collection of 14 of my solo piano compositions. My hometown of Joplin, Missouri is located within two counties in that state, Jasper and Newton. Though I was born in a hospital in Newton County, Jasper County is the one that borders Galena, Kansas, the town in which I spent the first five years of my life. This is a musical whimsy about this place. Skipping Rocks at Shoal Creek is a 14 page advanced intermediate level piece in the key of E major. It is from my album 'The Open Road', a collection of 14 of my solo piano compositions. I rarely visit any body of water without scouring the shoreline to find good skipping rocks. My father taught me this beloved skill, and he started me early. Near Galena, Kansas, there is a place called Shoal Creek which, as a small child, I called ‘The River And Throw Rocks.’ My sweet and simple memories of this place are what I aim to bring to life in this piece. Wheat is a 7 page advanced intermediate level piece in the key of A flat major. It is from my album 'The Open Road', a collection of 14 of my solo piano compositions. Though I was born in Missouri, I do think of Kansas as my home state - it’s where I spent the first five years of my life. One of the most beautiful sights (there or anywhere, in my opinion) is that of wheat fields holding up the sky for as far as the eye can see, swaying gently like waves upon the ocean. That sight was the inspiration for this piece. Kansas is known for its sunflowers, and no matter where I find them in my travels, I love the way they seem to dance when the wind is just so. It’s that swagger that sparked the idea for this little piece. The Storm's Promise is a 9 page advanced intermediate level piece in the key of A minor. It is from my album 'The Open Road', a collection of 14 of my solo piano compositions. This, like ‘Lullaby’, also originally appeared on Wrestling Angels, and it was inspired by a particularly strong thunderstorm I experienced while visiting friends and family in Kansas when I was a teenager. The original recording was much more robust, and I really enjoyed approaching it anew as a solo piano piece for The Open Road. Late October is a 12 page advanced intermediate level piece in the key of E flat major (though it spends most of its time in A flat lydian). There is nothing quite like fall in New England, and there is also a very poignant beauty to be found in that time after the tourists have all gone home, after the brilliant colors have faded, before the leaves have all fallen to the ground. It is that stark beauty that inspired this piece.
