He founded his own private symphony orchestra, organised public concerts in St Petersburg, and founded the Musical Historical Society. He conducted a choir that he had inherited from his father, Dimitri. In 1917 he fled the Russian revolution, escaping to Finland and finally moving via Belgium to Paris, where he and his wife died in poverty in 1930. 'Now ye Powers of Heaven' is a majestic setting, originally in church Slavonic, of a hymn associated with a Lenten liturgy of the Byzantine Rite, that of the Presanctified Gifts. Originally voiced for mixed choir, it is possibly more frequently heard in an arrangement for all male voices, with a very low second bass part. This sits nicely for trombone quartet, as do the unmistakeably Russian harmonies. Item number: DM 2308 MP3 sound file is produced from Sibelius.
