A few years ago, I attended a concert by the National University of Singapore Symphony Orchestra, a group of passionate students, at the National University of Singapore. They performed Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, which has continuously captivated me through the wild, grotesque sounds. Recently, my friend, Joshua suggested that I could write an orchestral transcription for Dream of a Witches’ Sabbath. I have decided to keep the instrumentation to a minimum, where smaller size bands can give it a try without the fear of not owning unusual auxiliary instruments, but still able to maintain the original orchestral sounds.  The original program notes by Berlioz is as follows: He sees himself at a witches' sabbath, in the midst of a hideous gathering of shades, sorcerers and monsters of every kind who have come together for his funeral. Strange sounds, groans, outbursts of laughter; distant shouts which seem to be answered by more shouts. The beloved melody appears once more, but has now lost its noble and shy character; it is now no more than a vulgar dance tune, trivial and grotesque: it is she who is coming to the sabbath ... Roar of delight at her arrival ... She joins the diabolical orgy ... The funeral knell tolls, burlesque parody of the Dies irae, the dance of the witches. The dance of the witches combined with the Dies irae.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.1081716). To say Berlioz had a fondness for the sound of the Trombone would be an understatement. The section is front and center in almost all of his works. The Oraison from the Grande Symphonie Funèbre et Triumphale for solo Trombone & Wind Ensemble beautifully arranged by Jonathan Caldwell features a single trombonist accompanied by a Wind Ensemble in an expressive recitative and aria which stays very true to the original score. This solo is from the second movement titled Oraison Funèbre (Funeral Oration) and gives the soloist plenty of room for expressive playing. This beautiful movement is appropriate for advanced performers and is about 7-minutes in length.

The Witches’ Sabbath is the fifth and final movement tells the story of the author himself amongst a hideous gathering of sorcerers, monsters and witches who have come together for his funeral. The original melody from the first movement is now a vulgar and grotesque dance. Berlioz also combines the Dies irae melody to strike even more fear into the listener. This arrangement of about 10 minutes in length by Randall Malmstrom is a full transcription of the movement and is appropriate for advanced performers.

The melody throughout the piece is the same, but each time, it is varied, especially near the middle of the work, where the climax is reached. The article is meant to be played briskly, with emotion, and is inspired by or reminiscent of night. The poem that inspired Liebestraum No. 3 is about unconditional mature love, expressing the extent of the speaker's love through the sacrifice he's willing to endure. The first Movement of Ludwig van Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. The first movement, in C♯ minor, is written in an approximate truncated sonata form. The movement opens with an octave in the left hand and a triplet figuration in the right. A melody that Hector Berlioz called a lamentation, mostly by the right hand, is played against an accompanying ostinato triplet rhythm, simultaneously played by the right hand. The movement is played pianissimo or very quietly, and the loudest it gets is mezzo forte or moderately loud. The adagio sostenuto has made a powerful impression on many listeners; for instance, Berlioz said of it that it is one of those poems that human language does not know how to qualify. Beethoven's student Carl Czerny called it a nocturnal scene, in which a mournful ghostly voice sounds from the distance. The movement was very popular in Beethoven's day, to the point of exasperating the composer himself, who remarked to Czerny, Surely I've written better things..
