This is a “toccata� for whom? Answer: the celli, basses, bassoons and tuba, for this is a workout for those often under-challenged members. In addition, this a gem of a piece as regards its wonderfully concise construction and simple, satisfying form. It is historically ironic, given Berlioz' wild public image and antipathy to musical authority, that he could produce such a work as this so effortlessly, a product a pure intellect without seeming passion. This could serve as an effective curtain-raiser or a daily exercise in general rehearsal. As many characteristics of the composer as I could manage are to be found in this arrangement, viz. Tbn. on melody, High viola the same, W/w tremolos, Fl./vl. Unison melody, --thereby (hopefully) evoking the Corsair Overture, Harold in Italy, Sym.Fantastique, Nuits d'Éte.

The first Movement of Ludwig van Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. The first movement, in C♯ minor, is written in an approximate truncated sonata form. The movement opens with an octave in the left hand and a triplet figuration in the right. A melody that Hector Berlioz called a lamentation, mostly by the right hand, is played against an accompanying ostinato triplet rhythm, simultaneously played by the right hand. The movement is played pianissimo or very quietly, and the loudest it gets is mezzo forte or moderately loud. The adagio sostenuto has made a powerful impression on many listeners; for instance, Berlioz said of it that it is one of those poems that human language does not know how to qualify. Beethoven's student Carl Czerny called it a nocturnal scene, in which a mournful ghostly voice sounds from the distance. The movement was very popular in Beethoven's day, to the point of exasperating the composer himself, who remarked to Czerny, Surely I've written better things..

Berlioz's Hungarian March from The Damnation of Faust is based on a song composed in 1809 by János Bihari (1764–1827), written in honor of Ferenc Rákóczi, a Hungarian military leader and politician who was at the heart of Hungary’s quest for independence from Austria. It is not known if the tune by Bihari was based on a Hungarian folk melody of the time or if he composed it himself .

Invitation to the Dance (Aufforderung zum Tanz[a]), Op. 65, J. 260, is a piano piece in rondo form written by Carl Maria von Weber in 1819. It is also well known in the 1841 orchestration by Hector Berlioz. It is sometimes called Invitation to the Waltz, but this is a mistranslation of the original.
It was the first concert waltz to be written: that is, the first work in waltz form meant for listening rather than for dancing.
