I was inspired by the movingly simple yet profoundly mysterious musical text Schubert had published by Robert Schumann under the title Reliquien [Relics], and a composition in three sections was born which oscillates between recitative-like sections and expansive ariosos. The beginning of Schubert’s enigmatic funeral march Franz Schuberts Begräbnis- Feyer [Franz Schubert’s funeral ceremony] for nine winds, written when Schubert was only 16, wanders like a phantom as a tonal shadow through the score. Mein Trio gliedert sich in drei Sätze: Der erste Satz besteht aus ununterbrochenen, gleichzeitig (aber auf verschiedenen Zeitebenen ablaufenden monochromen Linien, die einen hohen Grad gegenseitiger Entsprechungen aufweisen, aber nie identisch werden: Schattenformen, Verezrrung der Konturen wie im Hohlspiegel, Unschärfen, gleichzeitig bewegliche und unbewegliche Darstellung eines Objekts. Neben dem komplexen, dichten Klangbild des 1. Satzes wirkt der 2. Satz sehr gelöst, durchsichtig, farbig. Er besteht aus neun Teilen, die frei aneinandergefügt werden können. Die endgültige Gestalt sowohl der Gesamtform wie auch der Details wird von den Interpreten erst während der Aufführung bestimmt. My “fall leaf� traces Gideon Klein’s lifeline, which was shortened by unspeakable violence; starting at Přerov, the place of his birth, continuing via Prague to Therienstadt and ending in Auschwitz-Fürstengrube.
