Edvard Grieg (1843 –1907) was a Norwegian composer as well as a concert pianist. Most music historians consider him one of the foremost Romantic era composers. Consequently, his music is part of the international standard classical repertoire. Grieg, moreover, used Norwegian folk music in his compositions.  Consequently, he ushered Norwegian music to transnational consciousness. Furthermore, he forged a national musical identity for Norway. It is essential to realize that he did this in a manner similar to Jean Sibelius in Finland and Bedřich Smetana in Bohemia.

Grieg's Anitra's Dance is a significant movement from his Peer Gynt Suite. It depicts a seductive dance emphasizing the grace and beauty of Anitra, the daughter of a chieftain, who steals Peer Gynt's money after he attempts to seduce her. The movement acts as a fun and playful scherzo, with a waltz feel and pizzicato string sections creating a chaotic and fast-paced atmosphere, reflecting Anitra's seductiveness and Peer Gynt's infatuation with her. This piece is part of Grieg's incidental music to Henrik Ibsen's play Peer Gynt, and it is a notable example of Grieg's ability to musically capture the essence of the play's characters and scenes.

Composed in 2022, this String quartet is a work of considerable importance to me and one that I hold in high regard alongside my Opuses 19 to 22.

Structured in four movements, it is characterized by an intriguing introduction that sets the stage for the Allegro con Brio, a beautiful and lyrical second movement, a playful Scherzo in the third, and a challenging Presto in the fourth.

Die Sonate für Bassklarinette oder Violoncello und Klavier entstand im Frühjahr 1995 auf Anregung des holländischen Bassklarinettisten Henri Bok, dem das Werk auch gewidmet ist. Die drei Sätze haben stark erzählerischen, sprechenden Charakter. Der erste Satz wird aus zwei lyrischen Gedanken entwickelt, die sich in der Mitte zu einem dramatischen Höhepunkt steigern, um am Ende mit trauermarschähnlicher Geste zu versinken. Der Variationssatz vertritt die Funktion des Scherzos. In ihm werden in verschiedenen, vornehmlich rhythmisch geprägten Gestalten die virtuosen Möglichkeiten der beiden Partner genutzt. Die das Stück beschließende Elegie ist ein ausufernder Klagegesang, der die Basklarinette / das Cello die extremsten Lagen durchwandern läßt. Am Schluß verklingt das Stück mit entrückten Flageolettönen der Basklarinette / des Cellos und mit einem Plektrum gezupften Glockenklängen des Klaviers. - Stefan Heucke.

I was inspired to compose the Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano, Op. 4 towards the end of the Snow Pond Composer’s Workshop that I attended in the summer of 2017. I was compelled even further upon learning that the classical saxophone repertoire is limited. This work presented a challenge, as this is the first work I have composed for the saxophone.

The first movement resembles a traditional Sonata-Allegro form, with the first theme being inspired by Petrouchka by Igor Stravinsky. All of the themes in this sonata are presented as the movement progresses. The second movement is slow and lyrical, based on quartal harmonies and tonal ambiguity as well as a varying accompanying passage. The third movement is a short, yet frantic interlude based on augmented arpeggios. Henri Tomasi’s Trumpet Concerto serves as an inspiration for the fourth movement, in terms of its spontaneous character.

Maria-Félicie-Clémence de Grandval (1828–1907) was born on January 28, 1828 at Saint-Rémy-des-Monts, France and died on January 15, 1907 in Paris.After the death of her mother,Louise Adèle du Temple de Mésières, her father the Baron de Reiset, a military officer remarriedwith an Englishwoman and moved his family to London. After beginning her musical studiesprivately, she studied the piano with the German composer Friedrich von Flotow, who was a family friend. Returning to France, she studied the piano briefly with Chopin and composition with Camille Saint-Saëns. At first writing mostly sacred music, most of her public success was due to her comic operas: la Comtesse Eva, la Pénitente, Piccolino and Mazeppa. She also wrote orchestral music, chamber music, and over 60 songs (to poets such as Sully Prudhomme, MichelCarré, Henri Meilhac, Georges Hartmann, Charles Grandmougin and Louis Gallet.) She is chieflyknown today for her music for wind instruments, especially for the oboe.
