Depicting the last moments of Jesus on the cross, this classic African-American spiritual is often sung on Good Friday.

The lyrics describe the agony of Jesus, and also bring to mind the scripture of the suffering servant: Like a sheep being led to the slaughter or a lamb that is silent before her shearers, he did not open his mouth (Isaiah 53:7). His silence is praised because there was no deceit in his mouth (Isaiah 53:9).

The piano arrangement highlights the phrase Not a word in three iterations.  This meditative, powerful, poignant setting is suitable for a Good Friday liturgy, such as services based on the Seven Last Words of Christ, or the mass for Good Friday.

These two African-American spirituals (Calvary and They Crucified My Lord (And He Never Said A Mumbalin' Word)) are rarely arranged as piano preludes for church.

Yet their lyrics, and thus the reflection they invoke, could hardly be more fitting for Good Friday services and masses. Composed by unknown enslaved persons, who were all too familiar with physical agony and pain, these spirituals shed an immediate light on the crucifixion and death of Jesus.

Both pieces are set with lush harmonies, with a different iteration of the melody in each of their three parts. Reflective, poignant, powerful and prayerful, each arrangement is appropriate for Good Friday liturgies, as reflections during The Seven Last Words of Christ, and preludes during masses for suffering people worldwide.

This exciting arrangement of the well-known Easter hymn Orientis Partibus is in five parts.

The first movement could be heard as either modern or in the Baroque style, depending on how you play it. In fact, each movement of this partita can be played separately, making it perfect to cover any part of your Easter liturges that need music.

The second movement is a classic Baroque chorale prelude in the style of Walther or Pachelbel.

The third and fourth movements are dance-like, and take an interesting detour into minor to add variety.

The final movement of this piece puts the melody into the tenor, with an obbligato in the soprano range. The partita is very versatile and can be used for Easter Sunday or indeed any Sundays in the great fifty days!
