In 2009 when Sanctuary Choir of South Main Baptist Church in Houston where I served as Music Minister was scheduled to sing the National Anthem for the Houston Astros baseball game, I carefully examined the several arrangements in our library and other resources. Finding nothing which met the simple, straight-forward criteria I was searching for, we created this simple arrangement. Since its addition to the music library it has proven very useful on numerous occasions for a variety of groups. About the National Anthem:The lyrics for The Star-Spangled Banner were written on September 14, 1814 from a British ship in the Baltimore Harbor where attorney Francis Scott Key had waited anxiously through the night as the twenty-five hour bombing of Ft. McHenry progressed. He had been sent to negotiate the release of an American civilian and then was held on board the ship.  At the dawn’s early light when the flag could still be seen indicating the British had not taken the fort, he jotted down this poem which on March 3, 1931 finally became the National Anthem of the United States. Interestingly, it was Robert Ripley who in November of 1929 drew a panel in his syndicated cartoon, Ripley’s Believe It or Not stating Believe It or Not, America has no national anthem. With the encouragement of John Philip Sousa, President Herbert Hoover signed into law the adoption of The Star-Spangled Banner to rectify this situation. According to the Smithsonian, the melody, written by John Stafford Smith, was originally titled Anacreon in Heaven. Anacreon was an ancient Greek poet known for his love of wine and love. The song had become the constitutional song of a London gentlemen’s club called the Anacreontic Society. Could this explain the wide range of the melody? By utilizing this tune to the moving text, this once merry drinking song took on a bold new and powerful meaning. Thomas Coker, August 27, 2015

Published by Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings (A0.733036). German-born Theodore Moses Tobani was a composer arranger and violinist mostly in Philadelphia. He is said to have composed more than 550 pieces and made over 4500 arrangements. At times he used various pseudonyms such as Florence Reed, Andrew Herman and Theodore Moses under which many of his works were published. This version of The Star-Spangled Banner was the encore piece of a work he called Grand American Fantasia a medley of American songs that was first published in 1906 (when The Banner was still referred to as the unofficial American hymn.) In his arrangement Moses-Tobani wrote (what I call) flying woodwinds--the flutes and clarinets are racing through the skies while the rest of the band plays their boring parts. The words to The Banner are from the poem Defense of Ft. McHenry by Francis Scott Key; the music is derived from To Anacreon in Heaven a popular British and American pub song by John Stafford Smith.

This is my arrangement of a piece which has remained in obscurity, not only because it is by a less well known Polish/Russian composer but also because of the hand distribution.  It seems from the original that the composer wanted to write a study for the left hand, but has needlessly put the piece beyond comfortable.  This is a pity, since the piece is masterly.

With words by Fiona McEwan, the score is a song  for female voice and piano/keyboard.  It's based on the Prelude Opus 8 Nr 5 for piano by Pachulski and I have simplified the accompaniment to reveal the basic harmonies.  It's quite short, lasting about 2 minutes and I presume it would suit a pop singing voice, or a singer who can imitate that sort of voice.

Published by Arts In Fusion (A0.1452427). This is a delicate and highly atmospheric piece, unusally chromatic on the harp with sutbly shifting harmonies. There are no advanced techniques required but the pedalling is tricky and the phrasing isn't easy to pull off as a lot of the piece is very high in the pedal harp register. However, it is a magical short piece that would contrast well with something rich and romantic, or fast and more contemporary.
