Lyrics of Lord, Guard and Guide, also known as theUnited States Air Force Hymn. The text is derived from a prayer by poet Mary C.D. Hamilton. She also used the same text in A Hymn for Aviators, a musical setting by English composer Henry Baker (1852). Hamilton wrote her prayer in 1915 during World War I with the transcript first appearing in the American Student Hymnal of 1928 set to Mozart’s Dona Nobis Pacem. Years later during World War II, the initial verse of the prayer was adapted for use in The Navy Hymn as a tribute to naval aviators. This saxophone quartet (Intermediate level) arrangement is for Soprano Sax (Alto sub. part), Alto Sax,Tenor Sax, and Baritone Sax. A full score is included. The work was written in response to the wartime events of our time, and juxtaposes vocal movements based upon Latin prayers with purely orchestral sections (meditations on wartime subjects). The Latin prayers in this work consist of the Agnus Dei from the Roman Catholic Mass, a prayer which asks God for forgiveness of the 'sins of the world,' and two hymns to the Virgin Mary: Ave Maria and Ave Maris Stella. The concept of the Blessed Mother as the spiritual mother of all humanity is a powerful one which I believe touches us on a deep level. As children, our mothers give us guidance, tenderness, unconditional love and protection in a world where evil exists. In our time, horrific wartime events daily take their toll on innocent civilians, while motherhood is revered in all cultures. A popular, traditional English folk song arranged here for the 4-part mixed woodwind combination of two flutes, oboe and either clarinet in B-flat or bassoon.Greensleeves is sometimes credited to Henry VIII, the style of composition suggests a later, Elizabethan, origin.  The piece appears in various late sixteenth and early seventeenth century manuscript collections and is mentioned in Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor, which was written around 1597. The founder of the Mr Whippy ice cream company had a particular interest in Henry VIII and, believing him to be the composer of Greensleeves, chose the tune to use as the jingle heralding the arrival of his ice cream vans.

The line 'I hope to see my captain face to face,' indicates his lack of certainty (doubts) regarding meeting his 'Captain' (God) in a beautiful and mystical way.
