This setting treats the tune as a chorale prelude for piano (or organ), with the tune in the soprano. Hymnary.org tells us that English organist George Job Elvey (1816-1893 ), the composer of the tune, ST. GEORGE'S WINDSOR, was educated at Oxford and at the Royal Academy of Music. At age nineteen Elvey became organist and master of the boys' choir at St. George Chapel, Windsor, where he remained until his retirement in 1882. He was knighted after he provided music for Princess Louise's wedding in 1871.

It was not until 1872 that the poem was set to music by John Baptiste Calkin, an English organist. It is written on a medium easy level for beginning string players in 3 part harmony with viola doubling 2nd violin and cello doubling string bass. In the event instrumentation is lacking this type of scoring will make your group sound fuller and give your players more confidence. This well known traditional carol will be a delightful addition to your Holiday line-up. .
