♫ Longfellow, native of Maine, became America’s most famous poets. He is also known as an educator, a translator, and supported the abolition of slavery. His son, Charles, joined the Union army in 1863, without his father’s permission. In November of the same year Charles was seriously injured in the Battle of Mine Run. He authored “Christmas Bells� (the basis of this hymn) shortly afterward.

On Christmas Day is a medley of I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day and I Saw Three Ships by Mark R Lewis. John Baptiste Calkin wrote the music for I Heard the Bells in 1872 as an adaptation of the earlier poem Christmas Bells by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. I Saw Three Ships is an English carol thought to originate from the 17th century, though the lyrics used is most modern arrangements come from later published versions.

This arrangement is intended to be performed by SATB divisi choir and accompanied by a 3-5 octave handbell choir. All four voice parts pass the melody back and forth and are featured at different times and explore different vocal and accompaniment styles throughout the piece. Most intermediate choirs should be able to perform this piece, although the basses and alto should be able to sing down to a D2 or an F3 respectively (there are optional notes if this is too low). The handbell part is not particularly difficult but is active across the whole ensemble and uses mallets through one of the middle verses. There are also several key changes that will require quick bell changes or sharing of bells. It is also worth noting that I Heard the Bells is in 4/4 and I Saw Three Ships is in 6/8.

This download includes a piano and choir score for when handbells are not an option as well as the handbell sheet music. Handbells are the preferred accompaniment, although it will still sound good with just piano.

Many transcribers of this tune obscure the 1/4 notes by improperly beaming the 1/16 notes. This arrangement fixes that issue. Many bass players just play the hook during solos. This arrangement shows example of the vamp that do not rely on the hooks. The tune uses the Boden form used by Bartok and is used when playing jazz ballads.

Rainy Night in Georgia is a song written by Tony Joe White in 1967 and popularized by R&B vocalist Brook Benton in 1970. It was originally released by White on his 1969 album, Continued, on Monument Records, shortly before Benton's hit single was issued. Benton recorded the song in November 1969 with arranger/producer Arif Mardin at Criteria Studios in Miami, Florida. Benton had signed to a new record label, Cotillion Records (a subsidiary of Atlantic Records), by label A&R chief and producer Jerry Wexler. The RIAA certified the single gold for sales of one million copies. In 2004, it was ranked #498 on the List of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
This track features Cornell Dupree's guitar parts that are a masterclass on using double stops in Soul music, plus plenty of hammer on/pull off fills throughout.
