The melody has been taken from the Ninth Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven from 1823. In the last movement of this symphony Beethoven set music to the 'Ode to Joy' by Friedrich von Schiller from 1785. This poem sprang from Schiller's idealistic vision of men who become brothers – a vision Beethoven shared with him. In 1972 the Council of Europe adopted Beethoven's 'Ode to Joy' as its anthem. The well-known conductor Herbert von Karajan was commissioned to arrange three instrumental versions – for solo piano, wind orchestra and symphony orchestra. Without words, in the universal language of music, the anthem is an expression of the idealistic values of freedom, peace and solidarity which Europe stands for. In 1985 the heads of state and government adopted the hymn as the EU's official anthem. It does not replace the national anthems of the member states, but rather celebrates common values as well as unity in diversity. The score of this offical anthem is exclusively available from the Schott publishing house.

The Maid of the Mist in an arrangement for solo Cornet (Trumpet, Flugel, Baritone, Euphonium TC) & Wind Dectet of a fun light piece creating a great showpiece for the cornet. It is named after the sight-seeing boats for tourists in Niagara Falls. Set as a polka, there is much opportunity for the soloist to display quick fingers and light triple tonguing.To create a clean new edition, dynamics and articulations were made more consistent in the parts. Counter melodies were added to enhance the arrangement.American composer and Cornet player Herbert L. Clarke was one of the first soloists to combine a pyrotechnic technique with a lush, romantic sound. His virtuoso-with-a-heart' style set the standard for Cornet (and later Trumpet) players for the next several generations. He, along with Jean Baptiste Arban and Frank Simon, is considered to be one of the finest Cornetists in history. Many of Clarke's compositions are still regularly performed, including: 'The Maid of the Mist', 'Sounds of the Hudson', 'The Bride of the Waves', 'Stars in a Velvety Sky', 'From the Shores of the Mighty Pacific', 'The Debutante and Southern Cross'. 'The Maid of the Mist' was composed ca. 1912 and is one of about 50 pieces Clarke wrote to display his virtuosity in concerts. 'Maid of the Mist' is the name of a tourist boat that visitors to Niagara Falls can ride to view the falls up-close.

Jerome Kern’s first big hit (with Herbert Reynolds), this number from the 1914 Broadway musical, “The Girl from Utah,� helped change the trajectory of American love songs away from European influence (waltzes, flowery lyrics) and more toward the musical styles of the time. Its 4/4 meter shows influence of the American musical styles of the era (ragtime, fox trot) as well as a move toward American vernacular lyrics. The verses of this Anglican priest who was a contemporary of John Donne describe beautifully a dialog between 'Love’ (the Divine) and the human being.  The score attempts to illustrate the dramatic progression of this spiritual dialogue in which the eternal ´Love´ gives himself up to welcome the human being with merciful insistence as a privileged guest at a mystical meal. To make this dialogue clear while the choir takes the voice of the human nature -full of shame and guilt- while the Trebles assume the voice of the Divine Love -full of mercy and compassion-.  Neither the choosing of trebles nor the number 3 is casual: Childhood evokes naturally ideas of love and purity which are attributes of God himself, thus trebles seemed to me an appropriate choice to represent the voice of “Love� and the fact that there are three, is an intended reference to the Christian doctrine of the Trinity.
