Dem 1859 erschienenen geistlichen Werk Cantique tiré de L’imitation de Jésus-Christ für Bass-Solo, gemischten Chor (3 Frauenstimmen, TTB) und Orgel liegt ein Text aus dem gleichnamigen Andachtsbuch des französischen Barockdichters Pierre Corneille zugrunde. Meyerbeer gliedert seine Komposition in drei musikalisch gleich gestaltete Strophen, die jeweils von zu Herzen gehenden Klagegesängen des Bass-Solisten eingeleitet werden. Danach stimmt der sechsstimmige Chor in die Klage über die Trübsal auf Erden und die Gottessehnsucht ein. Ein wunderbares Stück Musik mit wahlweise französischem oder deutschem Text.
