The iconic Italian songs have served as the foundation for countless singers for over a hundred years.  My settings are an accessible alternative and will provide teachers with new tools for their students’ technical and musical advancement.  They offer a welcome change both melodically and harmonically and many have a limited range with a comfortable tessitura. Most of the songs are brief, lasting around two minutes.  Another attractive feature is the inclusion of a literal English translation directly above the Italian.  I believe these songs will be successful for auditions and in recital settings, both informal and formal.  My hope is that over time, these 24 Italian Songs and Arias for 21st Century Singers will take their place beside the originals for the establishment of a solid vocal technique.

They call me Shennong, but I only know myself as a young man. They say I tasted a hundred herbs for medicine, but I was merely hungry and bored. They praise my great achievements, yet I only remember her. She was the first person who left me at a loss.

HE is a man consumed by love, traversing heaven and earth, seeking only to join his beloved in the afterlife. SHE is a college student, exhausting all possibilities, yearning for a pure and genuine romance. No one can fully articulate their story, especially since the invention of writing by Cangjie. Everyone has been desperately searching for the truth about Shennong, caught between emotions and words. Of course, there is only one truth.

Adapted from Dung Kai-chung's short story Young Shennong, this work blends historical accounts with mythology. It uses songs to interpret the differences in experiences and employs rock music to fill in the gaps left by language.

Vincent (Starry, Starry Night) is a song by Don McLean, written as a tribute to Vincent van Gogh.

McLean wrote the lyrics in 1971 after reading a book about the life of Van Gogh. It was released on McLean's 1971 American Pie album; the following year, the song topped the UK Singles Chart for two weeks, and peaked at No. 12 in the United States, where it also hit No. 2 on the Easy Listening chart. Billboard ranked it as the No. 94 song for 1972.

GENERAL PREFACE

This edition of violin and violoncello duets follows closely my publication of the same Greek folk pieces for classical guitar. The arrangements for guitar solo were written in two-part counterpoint and followed the strophic form of the folk songs involved. The melodic transcriptions of the folk melodies were not based in any particular performance, also avoiding the elaborate in many cases instrumental introductions associated with these songs. Thus, only the vocal melodies in a general recognizable version were presented. This new presentation for instrumental duets will stay with this generalised melodic version (without exploiting the instrumental introductions), but the form from strophic will become ternary (ABA). In the middle section the main melody will be played in the lower voice and the original guitar contrapuntal voice will be used in the upper voice if by chance it includes invertible counterpoint, otherwise new material will be added to fit the rules but also the intended harmony.

The total collection is centred more on the music from mainland Greece and less in that from the Islands.
The three dance rhythms of Kalamatianos (7/8), Tsamikos (3/4), and Syrtos Balos (2/4) are predominant in the whole first collection.

This fantasy is a romantic work based on the opera La Traviata, one of Verdi's masterpieces.
It uses the great capabilities of the harp to show the emotions provoked in the main moments of the opera.
The main arias are modified through the harp spectrum.  The whole composition follows my interpretation of the opera,
my way of thinking and logic. The original themes are modified and combined with my own themes, transitions , and Cadenzas.
I combine the two of the most important tunes in the opera: Libiamo and Addio del'passato. Tha most significant thing for me is that they show two very important and contrasting moments in Violeta's life: wnen she falls in love and is happy, and when she senses the near approach of death. I recorded a CD with different opera fantasies, and this inspired me to compose my fantasy on La Traviata.  Enjoy!
