Composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim. Arranged by Peet du Toit. Contemporary. Score and parts. 11 pages. Peet du Toit #5801391. Published by Peet du Toit (A0.802574).

Samba do Avião (a.k.a. Song of the Jet, translated literally as Airplane Samba) is a Brazilian song composed in 1962 by Antônio Carlos Jobim, who also wrote the original Portuguese lyrics. The English-language lyrics are by Gene Lees.

In the biography Antonio Carlos Jobim: An Illuminated Man, Helena Jobim describes how her brother came up with the idea for the song: Tom's many walks from Ipanema to Santos Dumont Airport yielded that ode of beauty... He would head towards the airport, following the water's edge around Guanabara's Bay. The pretext to go there was to buy foreign magazines and newspapers. From Santos Dumont Airport he could observe his passion, the airplane. Yet he still kept some distance from those machines. He was afraid of flying, but he loved their power, splendor, and aerodynamics-man's conquest over machine.

In the song, Jobim writes about landing at Galeão in Rio de Janeiro. The airport was renamed in his honor in 1999 and is now called Rio de Janeiro–Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport.

Jobim wrote Samba do Avião for an Italian film, Copacabana Palace (1962), where it was performed by Jula De Palma and I 4 + 4 di Nora Orlandi. The movie was filmed in Rio and features cameo appearances by Jobim, João Gilberto and Os Cariocas.

The first performance of the song was by Jobim and Os Cariocas in August 1962 at the Au Bon Gourmet restaurant in Copacabana, Rio, at what music historian Ruy Castro calls the bossa nova show to end all bossa nova shows, as it featured Jobim, João Gilberto, Vinícius de Moraes and Os Cariocas on stage together for the only time.

The first recording of the song was released in October 1962 by Elza Laranjeira. Os Cariocas had a hit with their rendition in 1963.

The first English-language version was by Tony Bennett for his 1965 album If I Ruled the World: Songs for the Jet Set.

Here is my brass quintet version of the song for your enjoyment.

Composed by Christine Southworth. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and parts. 61 pages. Airplane Ears Music #5802121. Published by Airplane Ears Music (A0.1013064).

Zap! (2005, 45 minutes)
for Van de Graaff Generator, Lyricon, voices, guitar, cello, bass, percussion, piano, robotic xylophone and electronics.

The sound of electricity at its rawest and most majestic - sparks, booms, lightning bolts, sizzling corona and low hums from giant motors - intermingle with the sounds of cello, bass, guitar, piano, clarinets, percussion and voice. Christine Southworth created Zap! in 2004 to explore these possibilities, using the Boston Museum of Science's Theater of Electricity as her venue and instrument. Its centerpiece - MIT Professor Robert Van de Graaff's eponymous Generator, was born in 1931 as one of the world's largest atom smashers. It is still the largest of its kind in the world, standing forty-feet tall and producing up to 1.5 million volts of electricity. Zap!, a composition in seven parts, takes the sounds of this machine, two large Tesla Coils, and a Jacob's Ladder, merged with rock rhythms and sweet melodies performed by Robert Black, David Cossin, Felix Fan, Philippa Thompson, Eddie Whalen, & Evan Ziporyn. The resulting music is ... electrifying!Premiered February 4, 2005 at Boston Museum of Science by Ensemble Robot, Jeff Lieberman (guitar), Blake Newman (bass), Sachi Sato (keyboard), Mei-mi Lin (keyboard), Akili Haynes (percussion, voice), Erik Nugent (Lyricon, voice), Rebecca Zook (cello), Christine Southworth (voice, Van de Graaff controls), Leila Hasan (Van de Graaff controls), Giles Hall (robot controls).

Composed by Jeff Tincher. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and parts. 19 pages. Jeff Tincher #6017667. Published by Jeff Tincher (A0.584653).

This begins with a 7/4 time signature in A minor. The initial passage was created to sound like an industrial region in a run-down town. The machines continue to progress until the complete building is running like a well-oiled machine, to quote a anecdote. As it continues the business runs smooth like a waltz in 3/4 time. For a moment the initial passage returns before a climax in A major. The finale concludes as the day ends with the original passage returning in 7/4 time as the business closes for the day. Duration = 4:00. Hear the full version of composition on Jeff Tincher's For String Quartet CD. SKU: A0.1024611

Composed by Liam Cullins. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score. 4 pages. Liam Cullins #4968365. Published by Liam Cullins (A0.1024611).

A short piece I wrote after my niece Roman Ellis Cullins was born after just 26 weeks into her development. She was such a frail, almost alien-looking thing that had several machines hooked to her just to keep her alive, and had to spend the first few months of her life in NICU.

Thankfully, Roman has fully developed with few complications and now lives at home with my sister and brother-in-law. With this piece, I tried to capture both the sweetness and the oddity of Roman's journey thus far, choosing strange, often crunchy harmonies. Keep in mind that it's mostly in 8/8, which an odd meter. The beat grouping is 3+3+2-notice how the left hand is beamed.
