One of the most famous pieces of Chinese classical music, this composition was originally written for solo Pipa and has been popular since the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). It was previously known as Pipa of Xunyang, and Flute and Drum Music at Dusk, before it was given its current name in 1925. The name Moonlit Night on the Spring River is derived from a Tang Dynasty (618-907) poem by Zhang Ruoxu, which is very well regarded in China. The poem describes a scene of moonlight reflecting on the surface of a river in spring.

Moonlit Night on Spring River is written in a multi-sectional form, with each section noticeably different to the others but with some recurring phrases which tie the whole composition together. Although it was originally composed for pipa, this guitar arrangement is based on a version for guzheng, which is a relative of the guqin, but with 21 strings and moveable bridges. The tuning for this arrangement is DGBEAD, from the lowest to highest string. As with Moon Over Guan Mountain, this arrangement is scored one tone higher, as if the third and fourth strings have been detuned by a semitone. I used a mixture pick, fingers, and hybrid picking to play this arrangement, with the fast, single note lines played with a pick and the loud chordal passages with hybrid picking. The quieter sections use fingers only.

Jasmine, Mo Li Hua, is not just a flower in Chinese tradition, it is a popular title for Chinese folk songs and tunes. Except for the most famous one which has been internationally acknowledged that I adopted, I picked another Cantonese folk tune also named Jasmine for this composition.

In every big historical moment, no matter good or bad, Jasmine is the most crucial tune accompanied by us, we sang, we played it. There have been happening many things recently in Hong Kong. How do we adopt these two tunes in our context?

Here it is presented for early elementary piano students, with an optional teacher duet.
The student part remains in five finger position throughout, with only one hand position shift. Reading range is limited to the notes around middle C, no accidentals. Fingering suggestions are provided.

September 12, 1991, I met a fog in the city of Knoxville, Tennessee. Everything became very vague. Not only that the Great Smoky Mountain, which was clearly visible on the sunny day, was completely blocked by the fog, the neighbors' brick houses and flowers are also very hazy. But, the cricket's sound could be heard clearly.  I wrote the Autumn fog in twenty eight Chinese characters. Twenty-three years later, when I was seventy-seven years old, I found the poem in the old manuscript and scanned it into an electronic version. I used two days to compose a song for the poem. February 2016, I visited New Orleans and added another 28 Chinese characters to form a longer poem as following. 秋霧 é«˜é­�雄作: é� çœ‹ç™½ç´—掩é�’å±±, è¿‘è�½ç§‹èŸ²é³´ç¿ å£‡; 石屋朦朧隱芳è�‰, 旋花迷離上窗欖。茫茫人生å�«è‰±éšª, 旦夕ç¦�ç¦�莫æ„�天。良機å�ªå¾…有心人, 霾消日照彩雲邊。And I composed a longer song, published in my music sheet book. This is a short version of English translation of the original short poem.

Fengyang Flower Drum is a folk song from Anhui Province, China. It was very popular in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. This song is a folk ditty. One of the lyrics describes the plight of residents in Fengyang County, Anhui Province in the early Ming Dynasty, and insinuates that Zhu Yuanzhang failed to take care of the people in his hometown, making them unable to settle down and live in their hometown. 

The string part of this adapted version is derived from the arrangement by composer Bob Phillips, and the wind and percussion parts are configured according to the characteristics of traditional Chinese music, making it a complete symphonic work. Also, I was trying to add saxophone section into my orchestration to enhance and support the middle timbre of the orchestra, because the saxophone has a deeper sound to across the strings and woodwinds smoothly.

This adapted version is suitable for students with beginning level in orchestra performance, allowing students to feel the charm of symphonic music with simple techniques, and experience traditional Chinese culture and history.
