In E. L. Doctorow's novel Homer and Langley, based on Manhattan's notorious Fifth Avenue compulsively

hoarding Collyer brothers, Doctorow i!rst introduces his character Homer as he is losing his sight. Homer is keen to

notice the gradual fade out. Individual details are lost, then whole images are distorted, and i!nally he is completely

blind. In the darkness he can hear a sound made by an ice skater that was always present but never noticed: a soft

sound though full of intention, a deeper tone than you'd expect made by the skate blades, perhaps for having

sounded the resonant basso under the ice, scoot scut, scoot scut.

The composition begins as a very intimate prayer - and developed gradually into an enthusiastic public prayer. The soloist performance is the heart of the composition, as it can be heard in the recording , and a very good soloist is one of the keys for a successful performance.

The original tunes are simply beautiful, and the arrangements try to maintain this natural beauty. It's a very communicative and touching music, excellent as a part of any choral concert, and, of course a concert of sacred or Jewish music.
May be sung by any good SATB ensemble of about 12 singers or more.

The latest addition to the Flexible Favorites series for bells and optional instruments, Kathleen Thomerson’s popular hymn tune HOUSTON has been treated simply and delicately with minimal bell changes and techniques, making this a very accessible arrangement.  A short original melody comprises the introduction, interludes, and ending.  In the second stanza, the upper treble bells are played with mallets, while the hymn tune is played by the lower treble and bass.  The optional C or Bb instrument makes a lovely addition, and since 2-3 and 3-5 octave editions are available, this piece is perfect for festival use as well as for worship.
