A Summer Night for euphonium and piano is based on the composer's vocal setting of Elizabeth Drew Stoddard's sensuous poem.  It begins with a languorous melody, evocative of a warm summer evening. The middle section suggests the light fluttering of flying insects in the evening. For the final section, the sensuous melody intensifies, becoming the speaker's plea for the Night to present a lover. The plea then softens to a humble entreaty and the song ends as gently as it began.  .

Bl_music #6644623. Published by bl_music (A0.842573). Narcisse Bousquet (ca. 1800 – 1869) was a French composer, flageolet player and the conductor of the Elysée-Monmartre orchestra. He appears to have been active in both England and France in the first half of the Century. The dates given are the conventional ones, though there is a lack of evidence to support them. In about 1855, Bousquet worked with Jules Prudence Rivière at the Casino Paganini. There is a reference to him working in Paris at the Bal Barthélémy between about 1860 and 1865. One book Le Polycorde ou Nouveau Traite Théorique et Pratique de Musique, published in 1872 by J. Frédéric Giraud, describes a six-key French flageolet as the Systéme Bousquet so he may have been involved in the development of this type of instrument. Beyond this, very little is known about Bousquet and he does not appear in any of the usual sources for information about 19th Century French musicians. Solo part in bass clef suitable for euphonium or ophicleide.

Published in 1901, It is considered to be one of Joplin’s finest and most adventurous works. Indeed the complex harmony made the first publisher so nervous that he only released a simplified version. The Easy Winners refers to elite athletes who featured on the original title page.  This arrangement of The Easy Winners is arranged as a solo for one Euphonium with Piano accompaniment. Both the piano and the separate solo part are included in the one downloadable pdf file. Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. The double bass is used well, as both soloist, accompanist and equal partner, and the contrast of arco and pizzicato create new and interesting textures. The contrasting musical ideas are effective, and the use of solos, question and answer, and unified rhythms help to maintain interest for players and audiences alike. The cello and double bass duo is a popular ensemble with bassists and this piece would fit easily into any recital and for any audience. The changing tonalities keep the piece alive and alert. Conversation in Orange & Brown doesn't outstay its welcome and would be accessible to many musicians.
