The text is by Picander, one of Bach’s favorite librettists. of the four cantatas written by Bach for the feast (72, 73, 111, and 156), it was the last, and the only one scored for solo voice. Like Cantatas 73 and 111, it is a chorale cantata, employing a chorale melody in several movements. In this version, the composition was arranged for Baritone Saxophone and Piano by Harry Walker.

Here, the famous Waltz is arranged for Solo Soprano Saxophone and Piano, directly from the orchestral score. The first performance of the ballet was in St Petersburg in 1890. Like his other ballets, Sleeping Beauty was slow to gain popularity with the public and international recognition only came after Tchaikovsky’s death. Included in the single download are nine pages of piano score and an attached four-page part for the solo instrument. Musicians at an upper intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. The melody is expressive and legato; the accompaniment is challenging in parts with a high tempo throughout. Calypso performers such as Mighty Sparrow in turn have inspired new styles such as Ska, Reggae and Soca, while Calypso rhythms can be heard in countless international hits such as Mary’s Boy Child and Disney’s Under the Sea.
