After a brief return to F for the final stanza (with a descant limited to top space F) there is a subtle surprise by joy to Em and on to a singable ending in G, with options for second soprano. The voicing range from unison to 2-part and on to 3 and 4 parts, but in a singable, approachable range for choirs of medium ability and only a hint of easily sung divisi.The accompaniment is active but playable and the score suggests a harpsichord voice as the keyboard option. It’s Phrygian Out There uses the sound of the E Phrygian scale to suggest a snowstorm.  Uncommon in the early intermediate levels, the Phrygian scale helps students envision a snowstorm and to control the piece accordingly.  Feathered beaming in measure two is also a technique not commonly found in early intermediate piano solos however, my students are very capable of understanding and performing them, foreshadowing, and teaching, higher level techniques.  In the B section, the melody on the right hand is double voiced.  Once again, a technique not commonly found on this level but one easily understood and performed by my students.  It’s Phrygian Out There is well liked in my studio and I am sure your students will enjoy it fully.

I have always loved this hymn, and one Sunday morning when I had been called upon to write something lyric for our brass quartet (two trumpets in Bb, horn in F, and tuba), I went straight for It Is Well With My Soul.  This arrangement tells in music the story of Horatio Spafford and the circumstances under which he wrote the lyric for this hymn.  The piece opens with sounding of the horn of Spafford’s ship as she passes over the point at which Spafford's four daughters were lost.  The first verse builds dramatically as the lyric comes to Spafford and ends with the lovely chorus.  The next section is based on the third stanza of the hymn in which Spafford writes, My sin, not the part, but the whole, is nailed to the cross…  The horn gets the melody, evoking the sound of Spafford’s own voice, and the other instruments vividly paint the hammering of the nails.  However, as Spafford moves into the chorus, the harmony becomes dark and uncertain as Spafford’s grief overwhelms him; his faith wavers as he tries to believe what he is writing.  Then, the melody transfers to the trumpet as Spafford is answered by the higher voice from above-his daughters assuring him that, yes, it IS well, it is well.  The piece then ends with a peaceful statement of the chorus, evocative of the rolling sea and Spafford’s soul at peace.  This piece can be played by a student ensemble; the primary challenge is in achieving the level of expression and emotion required to pull off a piece like this.

The central theme appears in the third verse: And when I think that God, His Son not sparing, sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in. Mr. Hine and his family left Ukraine as famine and World War Two began, settling in Somerset, Britain, where he continued to serve in missionary efforts. And, although several competing translations appeared through the years, this version of the lyric was published in 1949 and quickly spread in popularity. So much change needs to happen in order for the near and long-term future of our world to be just and stable that I have felt a lot of guilt over my choice of profession. Why have I chosen to be a composer and musician when I could make more of an impact on solving these problems if I were a scientist or policy maker etc.? I have been struggling to find a solution to this dilemma for a while now and I just happened to be thinking about it, while filled with lots of stress and worries, one night as I was falling asleep in December of 2009. At the moment when I was in that state halfway between sleep and consciousness, I suddenly heard the line Do you hear how many you are? in my head, yet I felt as though I didn't come up with the line but that it was said TO me. I was instantly comforted, as if a load fell off my shoulders, and then I began to hear it being sung, which I knew was the beginning of a choral piece. I woke up, wrote down the music I was hearing (about the first six measures of the work) and then wrote down this entire poem. I truly feel that this message came to me for a reason, and that I need to share it through the music I create.
