Klee was fascinated by music (he played the violin) and many composers have interpreted Klee's notion of 'line' as a way to conceive musical melody. Lines on a Walk II is an abridged chamber version of the original Lines on a Walk piece that was flexibly scored in 15 instrumental parts. This second version is specifically written for flute, clarinet, piano, percussion (any 3 apt untuned instruments, plus marimba & vibraphone), violin, and cello. It was written for IXION and first performed by them, conducted by composer Michael Finnissy in 2001. Note: this document is the full score only. It features a 3-verse structure (mirroring the text), with coda. The piece builds up throughout, as an attempt to depict the increasing sense of abundant love, referred to in the text. The main melodic material is deliberately simple and rather folk/chant-like. This essentially appears as a single line in the first verse, becoming a two-part canon (by one bar) in the second verse, and finally a two-part canon (by half a bar) in the third verse. The imitative coda leads to ultimate resolution at the end. The work is highly accessible, and is designed for performance by good SA choirs, able to effectively sustain such unaccompanied singing. It takes the form of a 7-verse Epiphany carol, with introduction and coda, setting a poem by Laurie Twinam. Verse 1 gives the option for a single solo voice. Otherwise vocal lines, for two-part (SA) choir or duet, retain the folk tune contour throughout, with fairly simple harmonies and a canon. Around this, the piano accompaniment weaves a set of characterful variations, as a commentary on each differing verse, which is always linked by a 2-bar 'turnaround'. The work explores aspects of both major and minor tonality, as well as modality (with the characteristic flattened seventh), thus working within and around the given folk idiom. This piece is appropriate for virtually any standard and size of SA choir, including school, student, community, church and cathedral choirs, as well as for duet. The accompaniment can be on piano, or for organ if slightly adapted by the player. The English-language lyrics are by Gene Lees.In the biography Antonio Carlos Jobim: An Illuminated Man, Helena Jobim describes how her brother came up with the idea for the song: Tom's many walks from Ipanema to Santos Dumont Airport yielded that ode of beauty... He would head towards the airport, following the water's edge around Guanabara's Bay. The pretext to go there was to buy foreign magazines and newspapers. From Santos Dumont Airport he could observe his passion, the airplane. Yet he still kept some distance from those machines. He was afraid of flying, but he loved their power, splendor, and aerodynamics-man's conquest over machine.In the song, Jobim writes about landing at Galeão in Rio de Janeiro.
